Bible Note: tracebrown, 1Corinthians 12:1-11, key vs being 7. The purpose of the gift. Edifying the Body of Christ. 1Corinthians 14:2 ...the verse your posting. It does not say (unknown) tongue. Actually, it is a known tongue being discussed in this chapter. Looking further into this letter, Paul states in verse 10-12, "There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them are without significance. Therefore, I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me. Even so, since your are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the chruch that you seek to excel." Paul is speaking of a known language and how it should be administered. If you notice, Paul defined what tongue is being used, a known language. And we see that without having to consult a Concordance or Dictionary. But let us do that anyway for the sake of seeking knowledge and truth. "tongue", being used is defined: GLOSSA (Greek), a tongue [by implication a language] (specifically one naturally unaquired) Strongs Concordance and Dictionary IF you have access to a Vines Expository Dictionary. You will find a more direct definition to the word being used in these verses as well as others. All in all, a known language is being uttered. Again, in vs 12 Paul directs us to what we should be doing in the first place. EDIFYING the church with this gift. vs 4, "He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself..." Is this what the chapter is trying to get us to do, build ourselves up? Paul is stating the tongue does edify self, but it isnt to be used for that. It is a part of the Body needed to edify the Body. vs 5, "I wish you all spoke in tongues..." Is Paul implying that all "Do" or "Should" speak in tongues? vs 13,14, "Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. For If I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but MY UNDERSTANDING IS UNFRUITFUL." I dont think Paul is saying because my spirit is praying my mind doesnt/shouldnt have to know what Im praying about or for. How can YOU say AMEN to your own prayer if you dont know what your praying? vs 17, "For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified." Is Paul letting us know thats its ok to pray in a tongue? YES, but its UNFRUITFUL for the hearer. Paul is letting us know that speaking in tongues ISNT ALL THAT AND A BAG of CHIPS. or, is what Paul states next an incorrect view on my part? vs 18-20,"I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all, yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue." Does Paul mean he would like to speak in a tongue with the understanding - he doesnt have to understand - what he is saying or praying? He did say in verse (19), he would like to teach others also. What does he want to teach? vs 26, "...Let all things be done for edification." The chapter we find is speaking of the Body being edified. vs 28, "..if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church. Let him speak to himself and to God." Does this mean its ok to pray outloud in church even if someone next to you can hear you? What if your pastor says to pray in tongues outloud in church, do you/should you? vs 33, "For God is not the author of confusion but of peace..." With the tongues being used in churches today, does it not resemble what Paul was trying to correct? I pray (with my understanding) we can find a conclusion to hold onto. **SHALOM** |
