Bible Note: Ashestobeauty, an extract from your post reads as follows: "How can you be sure you are really saved? It cannot be reasoned out it takes faith, 'only believe'." ...... Now I cannot say that I patently disagree with your thesis. I don't disagree but feel that it needs to be sharpened with a clearer biblical definition of the kind of faith that leads to salvation. It cannot be denied, for example, that many followers of pagan religions have deep faith -- faith sufficiently strong to persuade them to give their very lives for a cause they consider just. But they are as lost as a goose in a snow storm. The Christian faith is not a blind faith; there is a sense in which it can certainly be "reasoned out." So come now, and let us reason together. John wrote a careful, reasonable Gospel. In it (20:30,31) he says, "And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." John wrote his book, a carefully documented book that, being reasonable, appeals to reason, in order to present cogent reasons to believe that Jesus is who He claimed to be. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God, and we must conclude that the word of God is either reasonable or else it is unreasonable, and few have ever considered it unreasonable....... And in his first epistle (1 John 5:13) he has removed the guesswork about our salvation: "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know you have eternal life..." Therefore, the status of our salvation certainly can be "reasoned out" quite clearly. If we are clearly the sheep of His pasture, we know that we have eternal life through Him...... About the "babbling" you state that you are living proof that it works and can be a powerful tool in one's walk with God. On occasion I've babbled, but never in a spiritual sense; thus I am not familiar with the practice. So please enlighten me. Exactly how does it "work" and how specifically is it a powerful tool in your walk with God? --Hank |
