Greetings One! It saves you without dealing with the filth of the flesh? Isn't salvation supposed to deal with sin? Why does Peter hasten to add that it does not cleanse the filth of the flesh? Is it done to get a good conscience from God? Is it done as a response of a good conscience? Is it done as a pledge of a good conscience? Is it the water, or the resurrection of Christ which actually saves? What exactly does the word 'save' mean in this verse? Healing, deliverance, freedom from sin? I asked these questions to simply point out that there is nothing 'simple' about this verse. Most of not even sure how to translate it, let alone how to interpret it! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Maybe the explanation I gave before is a bit simplistic so allow me to further elaborate. The context is speaking of the flood of Noah and a comparison is made. God saved Noah by water as God saves us through baptism. Is baptism a work? Look at how many years Noah labored but does God say of him? Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. Further more I could give you some high theological wrangling about how it saves us but I would be giving an opinion. It really doesn’t matter the fact is God said it and that is it. If we believe it or not it does change what is said. If it agrees with our theological view or not it does change what has been said. |
