Bible Note: Dear John, I agree with your assessment of our heart condition before the Lord. I've long used this particular passage to argue that point as well. However, after reading it through about thirty times, diagraming the sentences, observing the use of pronouns and various other phrases used in the previous chapters, I have changed my position. However, I have not changed my position regarding the doctrine of progressive sanctification nor the presence of sin in the life of the believer during the present life. (These doctrines are clearly addressed elsewhere.) I simply believe that the majority of Romans 7 is autobiographical, pre-conversion. Furthermore, the antidote for the struggle that you describe and that we all share is still Romans 8. Frankly, the fact that you are having a struggle is evidence of the Holy Spirit's work in your life as one of the redeemed. It is a tough struggle. But I'm persuaded that the Holy Spirit does more than reveal sin and instruct us in the Word. If you'll permit me to use the expression, I think that He has His sleeves rolled up and He's getting His hands dirty. In other words, He is actively working moment by moment to conform us into the image of Christ. Now, I could be making a mistake. I've made quite a few in my life! I want my hermeneutics to be as sound as possible. It is my opinion that this interpretation of Romans 7 is superior. I do not believe that it changes our doctrine. All that written, I have to admit my rotundity and extremely poor eyesight. :-) In Him, Doc |
