Subject: What is iniquity in Matthew 7:23? |
Bible Note: John, Matthew 5:19 “Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called GREAT in the kingdom of heaven.” Yeshua is plainly stating that the way to be GREAT in the kingdom is to "do and teach" the commandments. How could He make it clearer? Here is another clear statement: Matthew 5:20 “For (1063) I say (3004) unto you, (5213) That (3754) except (3362) your (5216) righteousness (1343) shall exceed (4052) * (4119) the righteousness of the scribes (1122) and (2532) Pharisees, (5330) ye shall in no case (3364) enter (1525) into (1519) the kingdom (932) of heaven. (3772) “ The numbers in parenthesis are Strong’s reference numbers. Notice after the word “exceed” there is “(4052) * (4119)”. 4052 means to “exceed a fixed number of measure”. The * is the un-translated word “pleion” (4119) which means “greater in quality, superior, more excellent”. Thus Yeshua is calling us not only to meet the physical requirements (4052) but also to the higher spiritual aspects (4119). If we continue through the sermon on the mount, the higher standard is further brought out. Matthew 5:21 “Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not KILL (PHYSICAL); and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:22But I say unto you, That whosoever is ANGRY (SPIRITUAL) with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: Matthew 5:27 ”Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery(PHYSICAL):28But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust (SPIRITUAL) after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. This is consistent with scripture. Luke 12:48 “…For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required…” We have been given much through the Blood Atonement but we are also held to not only the physical “law” but the spiritual Torah as well.
