Subject: What is iniquity in Matthew 7:23? |
Bible Note: Greetings Greg! Since you seem to reject the message of Galatians about the Law. How about Hebrews 8-10. Here is some of what Hebrews says about the Law and the Old Covenant. 1) Heb. 8:6 - "But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. 7 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8 But God found fault with the people and said: ??The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 9 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord." 2) Heb. 8:13 - "By calling this covenant ??new,? he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear." 3) Heb. 9:15 - "For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance?now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant." 4) Heb. 10:8 - "First he said, ??Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them? (although the law required them to be made). 9 Then he said, ??Here I am, I have come to do your will.? He sets aside the first to establish the second." Heb. 8:13 makes it perfectly clear that the Old Covenant is no longer in effect. So, we as Christians do not have to offer sacrifices, keep feasts and fevestivals, or be circumcised. Gal. 3:19 says, "What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator." Thus, the NT consistently affirms that neither the Law nor the Old Covenant are still in effect. Christ has come and fulfilled them both.
