Hi Hank, Can a liar be a follower of Christ (consider the apostle Peter)? Can a thief be a follower of Christ (consider the thief on the cross)? What about a murderer (consider the apostle Paul)? Sin is man's choice to be lord or ruler over his/her life (god), rather than allowing the Creator of the universe (God) to be his/her Lord. Consider the "original" sin. Adam and Eve did not lie, steal or murder anyone. What they did was to choose to be their own gods and, consequently, to reject the One true God. Sinful acts are symptoms of the disease (i.e., sin). Our Lord died on the cross so that ANYONE who believes, confesses and repents, will not perish, but have everlasting life. Once we have believed, may we continue to willfully sin? Absolutely not! (see Hebrews 10:26-39) Do we continue to sin, even after we have believed? Many believers do, because we have not yet been made perfect. The Lord is constantly perfecting us through the various trials that we must endure, and overcome, in this life. Thankfully, the Lord promises us that when we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness. It's good to know, as Paul wrote in Phil 1:6, "...I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." Blessings! |
