1 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | ashestobeauty | 27669
You are correct Joe, it is not a must in your walk with Christ. It is a gift that you can either accept and use or reject and do without. It does not have anything to do with your salvation. It's like having a brand new car in your driveway and being given the keys to drive it. It's yours. but if you still want to walk everywhere you go, you are welcome to do that. (it will just take a lot longer and you may run out of strength along the way.) There are many reasons to consider choosing the gift of tongues. some are as follows: 1) When you pray in tongues it builds and strengthens your spirit. Jude 1:20 - But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit 2) When you don’t know how to pray for something you can pray in tongues and the Holy Spirit will pray with you (Romans 8:26) In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and knows exactly what to pray so you will be praying according to what scripture says. (Very effective) 3) Satan does not understand tongues. It is your personal heavenly language that only God understands. (I bet this drives satan crazy!!) All I know is I've walked it for over 15 years and it's real, and I would not live a day without it! If you try to reason it out you will never experience it... Like I said it takes faith! It confounds the wise.... All around it just makes your walk with God much easier! Kind of like a car makes your life much easier!! :o) Creatively His, ashestobeauty |

Hello, a2b; Just out of curiosity, can you show where the Bible says we get to choose our gifts? Or that there is any gift that all believers are given? I think the references already given support the notion that gifts are distributed as God wills, not as we will, and that there is no one gift common to all. I certainly don't mean to challenge your gift or even your discovery of it. But I would caution you against generalizing from your own experience. It's easy to imagine Peter, James, and John getting the idea that the only "true" disciples were those who were present at the Transfiguration. But they had Jesus to show them that their experience was uniquely theirs and not a standard by which to measure others. We have the Bible which serves the same purpose. 3 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | ashestobeauty | 27730
If I understand scripture correctly there is a "Gift of tongues and interpretation" that is for the church, when during a service some speaks in tongues and then interprets what God is saying, which only some are given. But I do believe that the "evidence" of being filled with the Holy Spirit is being able to talk with your Father in your heavenly langue and it is the same as being given the gift of salvation which is given to all who would receive it. Mark 16 17 ""These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; Thank you for your sweet spirit and for not attacking me :o). |

Hi, a2b; Thanks for your reply. If I have a sweet spirit, it's that Holy one, not my carnal one.... At the risk of generalizing from my own experience ;-) I will just say that I have been baptized by the Holy Spirit and do not (yet, anyway) speak in tongues. Yet others have told me that they see evidence of the Spirit's indwelling. The passage you cite is troublesome because of its absense from early manuscripts. I hope you don't go 'round drinking Drano and playing with rattlesnakes. ;-) Peace and grace and a blessed and merry Christmas Steve aka Indiana Jones |
