1 | Define "praying in the Holy Spirit" | Acts 2:6 | Makarios | 27982 | ||
Greetings ashestobeauty, Here is some commentary on these verses (1 Cor. 14:14-15)... "Since praying or singing (in church or in private) in uninterpreted tongues does not engage the mind, it is better to pray or sing in a language everyone understands so that the gift may be used fruitfully." [Ryrie Study Bible] "14:14-17 Paul continued to speak sarcastically (cf. v. 16; 4:8-10) about counterfeit tongues, so he used the singular "tongue", which refers to the fake gift. He was speaking hypothetically to illustrate the foolishness and pointlessness of speaking in ecstatic gibberish. The speaker could not understand, and what virtue is there in praying to God or praising God without understanding? No one can "Amen" such nonsense." [MacArthur Study Bible] - Nolan |

Greetings Discipled! Yes! In the post that you have responded to, I most definitely did quote the MacArthur New King James Study Bible, written by Dr. John MacArthur (www.gty.org), copyright 1997, Word Publishing, and I highly recommend this excellent Study Bible! Yes, I do not want to leave any doubt whatsoever, and I want to make it absolutely clear: I used the MacArthur Study Bible, and I love to use it on a daily basis and I highly recommend it! However, you have stated.. "If so, is it true that He doesnt believe that tongues is to be used today, that it vanished at the end of some certain dispinsation along with prohesying?" I do not believe that Mr. MacArthur believes that the gift of tongues is a gift that is obsolete or not being used in the present day and age. Perhaps you could surf to www.gty.org and gain a better perspective of what MacArthur believes on this subject. However, if you ask how I, Nolan Keck, feel about the gift of speaking in tongues, then I would say that it is and continues to be a "legitimate" gift that is still being used today, in this present day and age (1 Cor. 12). Blessings to you, Nolan |

Nolan, I know you consider it to be legitimate today. I do also enjoy John MacArthur as a teacher of the Word. He has WONDERFUL insight and wisdom. Thank you for the web addy...i have it. But, I do believe he doesnt think the gifts of prophecy, tongues, healings is still prevelant. Hope I am wrong. I know another one of my favorite teachers believes they are gone. Chuck Swindoll...he and a few others from Dallas Seminary have the same beliefs. *SHALOM* D |
