1 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | ashestobeauty | 27726
Hi Hank, First let me say that my goal is not to offend anyone or change anyone’s view on this topic it was simply to try to help someone that asked a question. So, after this answer I will not be getting into any debate with anyone over the issue. First let me define "babbling": The reason I used that word was because Joe quoted speaking in tongues as "babbling nonsense” otherwise known as: Your heavenly language or speaking in tongues. The fact that salvation is offered and available can be reasoned out, but we are discussing the evidence of it, which comes through having faith and believing. It is a gift, not based on our good works, given by grace. We simply have to choose to believe that something that wonderful is free and for us. Same with Speaking in tongues. There will always be debates on this topic (of which I really do not care to get into) What I was trying to do is encourage someone who would like to have it. And in my statement that it is powerful in my life I would say that, just as in salvation, "you shall know them by their fruit". I am a changed person because of it. I used to be very independent and needed no one, I did everything in my own strength and only included God in MY PLAN when needed. I hurt a lot of people and offended many along the way. To the point of almost loosing my husband and ending up divorced. I tried to change myself, looked into counseling, and read a lot. But what helped the most was my times spent just "talking in tongues". When I was down and wanted to give up... this would build up my spirit man When I was in a bind and did not know what to pray for, I would just talk in tongues and God would show me what to do, when to do it and how. When my heart was troubled but I had no idea why, I would talk in tongues and a peace would come over me. When I would deal with issues about me and things I needed to change I would go before him and talk in my heavenly language and get incite and direction as to how HE was changing me, and I simply needed to abide in Him. So, to answer your question "how specifically is it a powerful tool in your walk with God" It has brought about change in me and my life, much faster and to a more effective degree than any book, councilor, tape, or support group ever could. It is one thing to have the Holy Spirit "dwelling in you" but you go to a whole other level when you allow Him to work in you, one of the ways to do this is through taking advantage of your gift of "speaking in tongues". You are giving Him Power to work in and through you. That's the power I was referring to. P.S. Because of the power of God’s Holy Spirit in me and the fact that I took advantage of the Gift of speaking in tongues, I am still married and happier than I’ve ever been, and I acctually WANT TO be a submissive wife and work in unity with my husband (that's proof of the power!), God is blessing our Ministry and it is growing, and I am a changed person who allows God to be in control of my life. I still “slip up” every now and then, but I simply go back to the closet, spend time with Him, and “babble” as needed :o). |

2 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | Hank | 27774
Ashestobeauty, two final short questions, if you will permit me, regarding your experiences of speaking in tongues. (1) Do you initiate these experiences (sessions) yourself or does some agent (Spirit?) outside yourself initiate them? (2) Do you or does anyone else understand what you are saying when you are thus engaged? --Hank
3 | when you talk to God... | Acts 2:6 | ashestobeauty | 27776
When you talk to God in English, Do you initiate that experience yourself? :o) As far as understanding what is being said, My Spirit is talking to God it doesn't matter if my mind understands it or not. There are times though when I will also say some words in English and that will bring clarity to what I am praying for or about. I do believe that God can work through people who have the ministry Gift of Speaking In Tongues and then interpreting in a service setting, and give them the ability to speak in foreign languages so that someone who is from another country, will understand what they are saying. I've heard of that happening. But in my own time with God I simply speak from my spirit at times, and it's not in English. Most of the time I pray in English but there are times when I use the gift of tongues. One question for you, what is your motive for asking all these questions? I do not mind sharing my heart with someone who is genuinely interested in the topic and willing to agree to disagree, but if your motive is to prove me wrong or get me to "slip up" by something I say then let's end it here. |

4 | when you talk to God... | Acts 2:6 | Hank | 27780
Ashestobeauty: I do not impugn your motives and trust that I have not given you valid reason to impugn mine. As I have said before so say I again: It has never been my practice to speak in tongues nor have I had occasion to converse on the subject with anyone who does. My questions merely were to seek information on the subject, haply the better to understand it. It is not my business to "prove" you or anyone wrong; that authority is not vested in me. And I derive no pleasure in trying to trip up anyone. I do thank you for your efforts in answering my questions and can understand your having questions about my questions. Please take solace in my assurance to you that I have neither sinister motives nor hidden agenda. A merry and Christ-centered Christmas wish to you and your family. --Hank
5 | when you talk to God... | Acts 2:6 | ashestobeauty | 27781
Just feeling a little "beaten" down right now. Forgive me if I'm on the defense :o) I love to talk about God's word and the wonderful Things He has done. And I don’t mind at all sharing why I believe what I believe as long as all involved in the conversation, communicate with respect and brotherly love. At times I have not felt that in some of the responses I have received from others. So I just wanted to clarify where this conversation was going. Thanks. |
