1 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | EdB | 27849
Joe May I very hesitantly step into this? I debated waiting until Tim responded since he does it more eloquently than me however it would like to say your right on a few points. Today in many churches the manifestations is far more important than anything else. People are seeking manifestation rather than God. Your also right in saying God’s word is being pushed out. Most anything is an acceptable substitute for God’s word and that has me the most concerned of all. You stated many people are driven by experience rather than God’s word. And again I agree totally. They mistakenly believe since they experienced thus and such it has to be right, however Satan can and will counterfeit experiences. That all said I view the manifestation of speaking in tongues as a further yielding of my will to the Holy Spirit’s. I do not see it as getting anymore of the Holy Spirit or being more saved but rather allowing the Holy Spirit to manifest through me. I think speaking in tongues and particularly praying in tongues is seriously abused, in most churches. It should never be done in public unless there is interpretation. And I think the message should be more than the grass is green and the sky is blue and God loves you. I believe a message should speak to each believer in the church and have a purpose. Also the practice of praying in tongues can make us into lazy Christians. We can lock out everything and allow the Holy Spirit pray through us and never advance in our prayer lives. I know and have experienced for myself where I could pray for hours in tongues and my mind was either on hold or thinking about other things. Looking back I see no benefit to either me or my spirit. In fact I came to a horrible realization that I really didn’t know how to pray. I would say a few words then allow the Holy Spirit to come in and then say a few closing words and that was my prayer time be it 5 minutes or 5 hours. God sat me down one day and said okay now you pray! I had to work long and hard to come up with anything to say longer than 5 minutes. However as I read the scripture and studied the word I learned to pray and now I feel I have a great prayer life one that includes only short intervals of prayer in tongues when I feel the need or I can't express the need correctly. That all said I await Tim’s response before I say anymore. EdB |

2 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27873
EdB, IF I may? Thank you for your wonderful crispness and unselfish thoughts. Eloquence was used because your words were very well stated. It is nice to see a reasoned effort on your part to substantiate your love for the Lord in the way HE works. YOur love is not much different than mine, ashestobeauty, Hank, kalos, and the rest ive not mentioned. Your words sound alot like what Paul was saying "I would rather speak 5 words in my lingo than 5,000 in a tongue". It isnt surprising to me that TODAY is any different than Paul's day with the abuses we find. It shouldnt be, we were forwarned by Jesus and others. Godspeed to you .... **SHALOM** |
