2 | Define "praying in the Holy Spirit" | Acts 2:6 | Robert Nicholson | 27820
Dear brother: "Praying in the Spirit" as found in 1 Cor. 14:14-15. It is my understanding that when we pray publically we are leading the company in prayer, especially in the areas of worship and praise. Praying in the Spirit, would refer to a person who is led by the Holy Spirit as they pray and in 1 Cor. 14 Paul is all things might be done for Spiritual edification. The person who leads fellow believers in such prayer must first of all fill him or herself with the things of God. This will allow the Spirit of God to bring to our rememberance his word, his promises when we are praying. I have experienced this many times in a worship meeting in which the Holy Spirit guides our thoughts and thinking toward Christ and God at a much higher level than we could on our own. It should be the excercise of every believer to pray in the Spirit and to understand in the Spirit. Your Verse on Acts 2:6 is dealing with a very special time in the church when God needed to reach all who listened and by his Spirit he caused each person to hear in his own language. I think here we see the apostles were not speaking in tongues, rather the people hearing were hearing in their own tongue. Peace Robert |

robert, you say in the end of your letter that you dont think the apostles were speaking in tongues..rather than people hearing their lingo. I dont know what you mean...especially when Peter stood up and quoted JOEL...the prophecy of tongues was included in that dissertation. Previous to that, you stated, the HS guiding our thoughts toward Christ at a much higher level?? I have to ask like ashestobeauty did....What is praying in the spirit? and now...understanding in the spirit? Now im starting to get confused. *SHALOM* |

4 | Define "praying in the Holy Spirit" | Acts 2:6 | Robert Nicholson | 27899
Dear brother I noticed in Acts 2 that "every man heard them speak in his own language" It would appear that on that day there were people listening from many languages and yet similtanuously they heard the message in their own tongue. The point I was making is that the speaker would be speaking in his own language, and it was the Holy Spirit which was doing the translation. I do agree that the "sign gift" of speaking in tongues was a gift given to the church as " a sign not to them that believe, but to them that believe not:" 1 Cor. 14:22 Regarding "praying in the Spirit" which my personal understanding and experience is when we stand on our feet and lead the congregation out in worship and praise to our Saviour, that there are times when the Spirit of God seems to focus our minds and thoughts on Christ and on God. In other words it is not just saying prayers or praises. I did not intend to imply that I was reaching some supernatural level. What is praying in the spirit, and praying with understanding? In the references to follow we can see that it refers to a person being lead by the Holy Spirit in prayer in a language which is understandable to those who listen. Paul says in V14 "if I speak in an unkown tongue , my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful" This is why they are exhorted to use an interpreter for the edifiction of the listeners. I believe Paul summerizes praying with understanding in V. 19 "Yet in the church I had rather speak 5 words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, then 10 thousand words in an unknown tongue." What do you think? Peace in our Saviour's Name Robert |

Robert, blessings to you.! I agree with most of what you are saying. No buts included....ehehehe I sure would enjoy hearing a concise explanation for verses 15, 16 in 1Cor 14 these seem to tell me that the LORD wants me to be able to reason with HIM even when praying. but then...i could be convoluting the story...which i dont want *SHALOM* |
