1 | What is iniquity in Matthew 7:23? | Matt 7:23 | gjboone | 73727 | ||
Matthew 7:23 "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." My question is what is iniquity? This is my reasoning. Iniquity in the Greek is Strong’s 458 anomia, whose root is nomos with the prefix a (which means ‘non’ or ‘without’). The root word nomos is Strong's 3551 which is usually translated as "law". By cross-referencing with the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures) Jeremiah 31:33 and Hebrews 8:10 the word translated as "law" in English is "nomos" in Greek and "Torah" in Hebrew. Therefore the workers of iniquity are those that are "without Torah", "non-Torah", "do not observe Torah". Which is consistent with verses such as: Rev 22:14, Rev 14:12, Heb 5:9, Matt 5:20, 1John 2:4, etc. Torah observance is also consistent with the lives that Yeshua (Jesus), Peter and Paul led. |

gjboone Your argument is based on the definitions Dr. Strong assigned to the Greek words. While his understanding of Greek far surpasses mine he was not an expert. Better definitions can be found in other books and they show the word to mean without law, lawless deeds, godless deeds, without God. If you look at the other places the word “anomia” is used you will see this definition better suits the word than the definition you trying to apply to it. These are from the NASB where the word is translated “lawless”. Matthew 13:41 "The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, Matthew 23:28 "So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. Matthew 24:12 "Because lawlessness is increased, most people's love will grow cold. Romans 4:7 "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. Romans 6:19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification. 2 Cor. 6:14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 2 Thes. 2:3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 2 Thes. 2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. Hebrews 1:9 "YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS." Hebrews 10:17 "AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE." 1 John 3:4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. EdB |

Can we agree that the author of Hebrews is quoting from Jeremiah 31:33? If we can then the word translated as "law" in Hebrews 8:10 is the Hebrew word "Torah" (Strong's 8451). Agreed? Then it is no great leap to conceive that a form of the root word (nomos)is also refering to Torah. Conceptually, the meaning of Torah does not change across covenants. Torah is God's revelation, instruction and guidance to man on how to relate to God, family, community, etc. as outlined in the first 5 books of the Hebrew scriptures and further embellished by Yeshua (Jesus) during the sermon on the mount. With this in mind, let us realize that Yeshua is talking about Torah (law) in the beginning of the sermon on the mount (Matt 5:17) and at the end of the sermon (Matt 7:27). What else is he going to preach to thousands of Jews but Torah? Aside from being our Redeemer, He was also a Jewish Rabbi(teacher from the tribe of Judah). Protestant apologists try and distance the true Hebraic roots of the faith that Yeshua preached because they are the "lawless" ones, the ones who made up their own religion mixing truth with man-made doctrine (Matt 15:13-14). |

Greg I see my brother in the Lord Tim is conversing with you so I will step out and yield to his superior knowledge of the original Greek and Hebrew. From the little I do know of Greek and Hebrew you are forcing meanings that are just not found in the original. While your assumptions may appear to be logical they do violate existing rules of language, Greek in particular. Tim is better at explaining this. As for your argument of Jesus, Peter and Paul saying law and meaning the Torah, it has a problem in the fact that most of Paul’s ministry was to Gentiles who had no knowledge of the law. We see no indication of Paul attempting to teach the Torah to them. In Acts 15 we see a council of Jerusalem of which Peter and Paul are both present deciding what “laws” or “rules” should the newly converted Gentiles be given to live by. Peter addressing the question, should these new Christians be forced to conform to the Torah said, “why place something on them that WE HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO KEEP.” Then the discussion turns to Paul and Barnabas who tell how God honors the faith of the these new Christian Gentiles without their conforming to the “LAW”. At this point James took the floor and quoted from Amos the ninth chapter speaking of how the Gentiles will seek and find God. He then said let us not attempt to place them under the “LAW” (which Jesus had freed him and the others from) but rather tell them to refrain from things offered to idols, fornication, from what was strangled, and from blood. For your argument to be correct we would then have to declare the Book of Romans invalid and tear it from our Bibles. Romans clearly and with certainty teaches we are no longer under the “LAW”. EdB |

Tim I wasn't backing out of the discussion, I was backing out of trying to explain how he was reaching the wrong conclusions based on his understanding of the Greek. Your far superior to me on your understanding of the orignal languages than I so I bowed to your expertise. :-) You ain't doing such a bad job yourself on this subject. Keep it coming!!! EdB |
