Hi Tim, To answer your questions about Galatians I copied a letter I wrote to my father several months ago. It is amazing to me that with 66 books in the Bible, Christians pick out 2 that are to replace 4,000 years of history, what Yeshua says in Matthew 5:17-20, the fact that YHWH does not change, etc. I wonder what period of time Paul was referring to when he wrote: 2Timothy 4:3-4 "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables." Galatians Briefly Definitions/Misconceptions: · Torah/Law is not a list of “do’s and don’ts”, but Divine guidance and instruction on how to relate to God, man, beast and earth. · Torah is not a burden. “Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.” Deuteronomy 30:11 “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:30 · The “fences” that the Pharisees and rabbis placed around Torah are the burden. Fences are man-made rulings that everyone refers to as legalism. Example “Taking more than 50 steps on the Sabbath is considered work”, this is a rabbinical interpretation, it is not an original commandment. Background/Setting: · Paul is giving answers to specific questions/charges throughout the letter. · We have to determine what the questions/charges were. · Paul is writing to a large area filled with congregations not just one church. · False Brethren have been misrepresenting Paul or distorting his teachings. · False Brethren must have questioned his authority or misrepresented theirs. · When Paul refers to customs or burden he is talking about Rabbinical Judaism not the Torah. Chapter 1 1:1- · Right off the bat Paul announces that God ordained him, not men. 1:6-10 · Paul is amazed at how they could so quickly abandon what he taught. He explains that there are false brethren causing confusion who were sent by men not God. 1:11-24 · Paul explains how is teachings came from revelation and that he only briefly met with the leaders of Jerusalem. Some one has been lying about Paul’s training or calling. Chapter 2 2:1-10 · This is the same incident that is discussed in Acts 15, the Jerusalem council. Circumcision is not necessary for salvation. James, Peter and John all agreed that the Gentiles did not need to be circumcised for justification. 2:11-14 · Paul shows that he was more “righteous” than Peter, the one in whose name these “false brethren” probably said they studied under. 2:15-21 · This is the whole thrust of Galatians, although the Torah (Law) is just, holy and good no one is justified in God’s eyes by it. No one could keep the Torah the way the Father intended except Yeshua. Chapter 3 3:1-5 · Chastisement for abandoning the truth about grace received through faith; you received the gift of the Holy Spirit by faith, not by any righteous acts. 3:6-9 · Abraham was declared righteous by faith alone just as Gentiles are declared righteous by faith alone. Circumcision served as a seal/sign of the covenant (Genesis 17:11) just as circumcision of the heart by the Holy Spirit is a seal/sign of the renewed covenant (2 Corinthians 1:22). Note: Grace by faith is not a New Testament concept but was established before the birth of Israel. 3:10-14 · Everyone who tries to earn his righteousness is under the burden of keeping the whole law perfectly. By faith we receive the Holy Spirit who enables us to be conformed to His image. 3:15-25 · Ratifying another contract does not do away with the previous contract. Thus the Mosaic covenant did not nullify the Abrahamic covenant received by faith. The law was given to show what sin is, to show our need for a Saviour and to point the way to Messiah. Once a child reaches adulthood does he forget all the do’s and don’ts he was taught growing up? No, he understands the reasons behind the do’s and don’ts more fully and is more able to keep them with the right motives. 3:26-29 · You are under an “Old Testament” promise that was first given to Abraham. You are now a literal descendant of Abraham and thus an heir to his inheritance. Please note that although the scriptures do not specifically outline the commandments, Yahweh states in Genesis 26:5 that his seed is blessed “because Abraham obeyed me and kept my requirements, my commands, my decrees and my laws." Deuteronomy 30:6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed (that’s us), to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou MAYEST LIVE.” How do we live? Matthew 19:16-17 “And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?…but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.” |

Greg: I just happened to run across this old thread that apparently lasted for 3 weeks! I didn't read all the comments (nor much of the referenced material), but I found it interesting to observe the dialogue. I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses and have been kicked of this site several times for espousing our understanding of Scripture which you are probably aware rarely, if ever, crosses paths with "Protestant America." While I agree with many on the forum that Christians are not under the law (the covenant was with the Israelites and as a nation they were rejected), I do agree that the principles of the Mosaic Law are applicable to Christians today. Unlike many forum members, I agree with you that endurance to the end and doing the Father's will are conditions for salvation. I also agree that false religion is a favorite tool of the "messenger of light," and the weeds overtook the wheat until the time of the end described in Daniel 12. The question I have has to do with the extent to which Christians are obliged to follow the law. What of animal sacrifices, pelting with stones, etc? Hoping your still available, Knuck (don't ask) |

kucklehead, Your reply becomes more understandable to this old thread when you state "I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses and have been kicked of this site several times for espousing our understanding of Scripture which you are probably aware rarely, if ever, crosses paths with "Protestant America" If this is the case, then you must realize you're in violation of the Forum's posted guidleines.
