1 | What is iniquity in Matthew 7:23? | Matt 7:23 | John Reformed | 74087 | ||
Dear Greg, Gal 5:14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF... " As long as we foolishly attempt to pit one verse against another (as if one annuled or contradicted the the other) we will not come to an understanding of the truth of the matter. You claim: "I can show conclusively that Yeshua (Jesus) did not fulfill the "law", at least yet." You then cited Matt 5:17,18 as your proof text: "THINK NOT that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till ALL be fulfilled. Now, my understanding of the passage is that Jesus, in v.17, clearly states that He came not to destroy but to fulfill the law. You, on the other hand (basing your reason on v. 18) believe that he has yet to finish His work because He also said that "Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till ALL be fulfilled". On it's face, v.18 appears in contradiction to v. 17, and because of your desire to harmonize the two verses you have come to the conclusion that Jesus must mean His final fulfillment of the Law will not be complete until Heaven and Earth pass away. As I see it, your conclusion on Matt 17,18 puts you in conflict, not only with the teaching of the church down through the centuries, but, most importantly with many other passages from Scripture. Perhaps, God willing, we may reason together and reach an understanding that does harmonize Matthew 5:17,18 with Galatians, Hebrews and others. What if we take the Lord's meaning to be that He, personaly, did fulfill the Law but that only those who believe in Him derive the benefit of having His righteousness imputed to them? And all the "unbelievers", come Judgement Day, will stand guilty before God because of their failure to obey the commadments of the Law, of which not one jot or tittle have passed away. We, who believe, are "in Christ". Those who attempt to justify their sins by claiming to be "in Christ" but do not hate their sin and are unrepentent are self-decieved and to them He will say: "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' Dear John, Yes, Yeshua (Jesus) has fulfilled PART of the law but not ALL of it. That is why He paused in Luke 4:18 and sat down. There is no conflict here. The law will not pass away until ALL is fulfilled. We are part way there. I realize what I am stating is in contradiction with what has been taught for centuries. This is precisely the point. We have been deceived. Our current leaders are deceived. Look at all the warnings in the Bible to the "church": Acts 26:30 "26 …I am pure from the blood of all men. 27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. (AS A WATCHMAN-EZEKIEL 33:4-YOU ARE NOW RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELVES) 28 TAKE HEED therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall GRIEVOUS WOLVES (FALSE TEACHERS-NO TORAH) enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of YOUR OWN SELVES (THIS IS PROPHETIC) shall men arise, speaking PERVERSE THINGS (NO TORAH), to draw away disciples after them." Matthew 16:6,12 "6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the LEAVEN of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees (RELIGIOUS LEADERS)...12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the DOCTRINE of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. Matthew 24:4 "4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no MAN DECEIVE YOU.5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ (I AM ANOINTED); and SHALL DECEIVE MANY." Romans 17 "17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the DOCTRINE which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches DECEIVE the hearts of the simple." 2 Timothy 3:13 "But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, DECEIVING, and BEING DECEIVED. 14 BUT CONTINUE thou in the things which thou hast learned…;15 And that from a child thou hast known the HOLY SCRIPTURES (TORAH), which are able to make thee wise UNTO SALVATION through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All SCRIPTURE is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for DOCTRINE, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (HOW TO LIVE RIGHTEOUSLY): From what I see there are a lot of scriptures which state that we will be judged by our “works”. However, there are also a lot of scriptures that talk about having our “sins blotted out”. One key may be to continually confess our sins and be “cleansed from all unrighteousness” (1John 1:9). At any rate, it is apparent to me that there is some action required on our part. Revelation 3:5 “He that OVERCOMETH (ACTION WORD), the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” Maybe it means he that overcomes sin. Ecclesiastes 12-13 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.14 For God shall BRING EVERY WORK INTO JUDGMENT, with every secret thing, whether it be GOOD, or whether it be EVIL.” Galatians 6:7-8 Be not deceived; God IS NOT MOCKED: for WHATSOEVER a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. Proverbs 24:12 “If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?” Exodus 32:33 “And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.” Revelation 2 :23 “And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. If we were under some new “grace system” Galatians 6:7 would not be true and would contradict these scriptures as well (Jer 25:14, Matt 16:27, 2Cor 5:10, 11:15, Rev 14:13, 18:6, 20:12-13, I Sam 8:8, Ps 28:4, 33:15, Eze 9:10, Rom 2:6, Isa 59:18). The OT and the NT complement each other, in that, what is prophesied in the first is fulfilled in the second and one can not accurately interpret the second without a intimate knowledge of the first. The only way the Bible remains a coherent work is to realize that God did not change His mind about His commandments, which existed before the foundation of the world (John 1:1, Proverbs 8:22-36). I realize this may be a lot to get used to. It took YHWH 3 years to lead me out. I only wish someone would have told me as clearly 3 years ago and I would be that much further along.
