Bible Question:
I keep being told that Jesus says directly that He is God. However, I cannot seem to find any verse that states it that emphatically. All I find are vague passages that could be possibly interpretted as Jesus saying so, but not that actual statement. Jesus seems to let listeners/readers THINK what they want rather than answer the question directly. Where can I find this famous verse??? |
Bible Answer: Dear Ineffable: In this long discussion has anyone answered your original question? Well, in answer to your question, such a verse cannot be found. Jesus is never quoted as saying directly that he is God. Now, the Bible does teache that he is, and that point has been adequately demonstrated. However, it is interesting to note that though he had opportunity to deny equality with God, he did not. See the following passages. John 10:31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. John 10:32 Jesus answered them, "I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?" John 10:33 The Jews answered Him, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God." John 10:34 Jesus answered them, "Has it not been written in your Law, 'I SAID, YOU ARE GODS'? John 10:35 "If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), John 10:36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'? Please note that (1)this is not a denial, and (2) he had an opportunity to make a denial. John 5:17 But He answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working." John 5:18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. John 5:19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. John 5:20 "For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. John 5:21 "For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. John 5:22 "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, John 5:23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. Again, please note, (1)no denial and (2)opportunity. Peace, |
