1 | Where does Jesus say He is God? | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 45901
Hello IneffableUniverse John 8:58 (ESV) Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." There was no clearer statement the Lord could have used to convince the Jewish leaders who He was. By using "I am" (ego eimi) He was equating His person with that of the Holy One of Israel, YWHW. And the listeners understood the import of the statement as they were picking up stones to throw at Him. Steve |

And, Steve, it was for this very cause -- that Jesus claimed to be God -- that Jesus was despised and rejected and that gave rise to the plot to do away with Him which eventually led to His crucifixion. Had He gone along with the crowd, denied who He actually was, toned down his teaching and coddled to the will and wishes of the Pharisees, it is highly unlikely that He would have faced a mock trial that ended with His death on a cross. The debt we owe our Savior for who He is and for what He has done is beyond comprehension. --Hank
