Bible Question: Does the right to divorce carry with it the right to remarry? I.e., is divorce nothing more than legalized separation? |
Bible Answer: "It was said, 'WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE'; 15 Matt 5:32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 16 Matt 19:3 Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?" 17 Matt 19:7 They *said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?" 18 Matt 19:8 He *said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. 19 Matt 19:9 "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery." Concerning divorce this is one of the very definitive teaching of Christ on the matter. There is only one reason a man can divorce his wife and that is if she has been unfaithful, only on this occasion can the husband remarry without committing bigamy, though I suspect that the wife cannot. The Old Testament says different things about dicorce, such as: Deut. 24 :1 says "When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house, AND Mal 2:16 "For I hate divorce," says the LORD, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with wrong," says the LORD of hosts. "So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously." If we take our Lord's words as we read them then divorce is no more than a legal separation and does not carry the right to remarry. This is the view held by the catholic church. Christians of other denominations believe that divorce is final and does carry the right of remarriage with it. Teachers have told me that what our Lord did was to raise the status of women when he forbade their husbands just to divorce them three times as they were wont to do. I have heard another say that it is not what God wants when we condemn those who divorce. 1./Divorce however has always been a civil thing for us and 2./there are those who believe that unless a marriage is solemnized in church that it is no marriage at all. 3./What God has joined together let not man put assaunder. My question is if we are sure that God did not really join us together but it was an act our our own will then does that mean we can divorce? |
