Subject: divorce is not always a sin. |
Bible Note: It was Ezra, of course, who spoke the words to the Israelites concerning their divorce of pagan wives, but he was speaking as the prophet of God. It is essential to keep in mind that, in this instance, the marriages were not God-blessed to begin with, being in disobedience of His command. ..... Kalos has made an excellent post (#82935) that sheds light on Ezra's command to divorce. I commend it to you and can add nothing substantive to what he has said. I'll close with this personal note and observation. I've been married nearly 44 years and thus have no personal experience with divorce. I am also richly blessed by the fact that both my son and daughter have happy marriages and fine children. But I have seen among friends and acquaintances the pain and ugliness of divorce; and having seen the havoc it wrecks in families and the chaotic disruption it visits upon the lives of both adults and children, I don't wonder at God's hatred of divorce. Parties to a marriage should work tirelessly and unceasingly to preserve the sanctity of the marriage bond. I fear that far too many couples head for the divorce court in the mistaken belief that divorce offers a panacea for their problems, when they should be on their knees in prayer for God's hand to reach down and help them to keep their marriage intact. --Hank |
