NASB | John 5:19 ¶ Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 5:19 ¶ So Jesus answered them by saying, "I assure you and most solemnly say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself [of His own accord], unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever things the Father does, the Son [in His turn] also does in the same way. |

Bible Note: Greetings Xerxes! I understand where you are coming from, but I don't see how you get it from the text of Scripture. Allow me to explain! You wrote: "What I got out of that passage was that they need not look for a man here or there. "Don't be deceived. You won't see me in the way you would expect. My return will be like a flash of lightning (as in quick, destructive, and gone again as soon as it strikes)." Yet the text says: Mt. 24:27 - "For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man." The key word is 'visible'! The text doesn't make the case that His return will be so sudden that some might not see it. It specifically stresses the fact that it will be visible. Also, the 'thief in the night' expresses the unexpectedness of His return, not that He will come and go. The issue in these passages is being prepared for His return.
