NASB | John 5:19 ¶ Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 5:19 ¶ So Jesus answered them by saying, "I assure you and most solemnly say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself [of His own accord], unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever things the Father does, the Son [in His turn] also does in the same way. |

Bible Note: Hi Tim. I see what you are saying. It is good logic. What I got out of that passage was that they need not look for a man here or there. "Don't be deceived. You won't see me in the way you would expect. My return will be like a flash of lightning (as in quick, destructive, and gone again as soon as it strikes). My return will be like a thief in the night (come and gone, and you won't know it until you wake up and all your stuff is gone, so watch carefully for these signs I'm giving you). It will be like the days of Noah (they won't know that my wrath is upon them until it is too late)." I agree that a lightning strike is visible, but I did not get that meaning from his statement. On this, I am of the opinion that either interpretation is reasonable depending on your perspective, so if you do not agree with the way I see it, I hope we can agree to disagree on that matter. You have made a valid point, and I will give it consideration, but I am presently of the alternate opinion on the interpretation. The contradiction I was talking about is the expected visible appearance versus a quick strike of lightning. Again, I know a lightning strike is visible, but this is not of the same measure as a man on a horse. Understand where I'm coming from? Xerxes |
