1 | First Century Second Coming? | John 5:19 | Fatherof4 | 127709
Angel. Thank you for the well referenced reply. Re-read those scriptures. Doesn't it strike you that these events were to come upon THAT very generation in the first century? By what basis do you split Matt 16:27 and 28? It seems to me that these are one and the same event. Supported by Luke 21:31-33 in regard to THAT generation. You say no date is set, but the scriptures you cited seem to demonstrate that to the original audience that THEY should be expecting Jesus return in Judgement upon their OWN generation. I don't see any reason here that we should be still expecting these events to occur sometime in our own generation or in a future generation. It Jesus contempories who were to "keep watch." The apostate Jews were literally "cut to pieces' in AD 70. "the secret power of lawlessness" was already at work in the first century, and the lawless one was already being held back at that time. Which tells me, again, that these events were all first century events. |

2 | First Century Second Coming? | John 5:19 | JCrichton | 127722
Part 2 of 3 Yet this is only part of the revelation… verse 22 speaks of God’s direct intervention on an event that is on-going and it is specified that this intervention is due for the sake of the elect: it is not the Jews who are elected in Christ, but the Gentiles! Then, Jesus has further warnings about the signs/events to come: At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!‘ or, ‘There he is!‘ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect--if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time. "So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the desert,‘ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,‘ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather. (Matthew 24:23-28) We have been suffering these Christs/false prophets from the time of the Apostles… but clearly, Christ’s Second Coming has not happened! His Second Coming will not be shrouded with the conformities of the Old Covenant: He will Come in the full splendor of His Glory… no one will escape His Coming (Revelation 1:7). Jesus will no longer come to fulfill His obligation as the Lamb of God who hat to be offered in the outskirts of the Great City, He will come as the Lion of Israel, the Mighty King: with full Majesty and Power! Yet, Jesus offers still more signs: "Immediately after the distress of those days " ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ (Matthew 24:29) We know that powerful signs were revealed at Jesus’ death on the Cross, including the sun darkening, and the moon, consumed in the darkness, could very well not have been noticed by any, heavenly bodies were so shaken that many people of God rose from their graves and, at Jesus’ resurrection, went into the Holy City. But that was not the full revelation: "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. (Matthew 24:30-31) Jesus’ death was a significant event in the life of Israel, but it could not have been of great importance to the rest of the world since most the world around them were polygamists and Jesus’ doctrine was rejected even by most of Israel… yet notice how Christ becomes the center of the world in verse 30: “all the nations of the earth will mourn!” Clearly this event has not happened! In verse 33 Jesus explains that when all these signs are seen His Second Coming is near! Though He returns to the signs that will be witnessed by the disciples in verse 34: "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. (Matthew 24:32-34) |

You've got me confused... You believe Jesus switches subjects between in Matthew 24 between the destruction of Jerusalem, then to some event in the far off future, then back again to the destruction of Jerusalem? You should familiarize yourself with the apocalyptic language being used here to describe God impending judgment his people. Very similar language is used to describe very similar type events in the OT. None of the LITERALLY happened, but the Jesus audience would know of these scriptures and would have had no doubt as to what he was saying was about to happen in Jerusalem. For example: Prophesying the fall of Babylon to the Medes in 539 B. C., Isaiah wrote: Behold, the Day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it. For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth with their light; The sun will be dark when it rises, And the moon will not shed its light (Isaiah 13:9-10). Also see: Isaiah 34:4 (destruction of Edom) Amos 8:9 (destruction of Samaria) Ezekiel 32:7-8 (destruction of Egypt) Finally, you have been deceived by Bible translations which have used translated the original as “earth” or "world" when it should have been translated as “land”. All the “nations of the land” did actually mourn when God used the Roman armies to come upon them in judgment in AD 70. What do you think Jesus was talking about when he said "this generation will certainly not pass away until ALL these things have happened"? (emphasis mine!). |

Hi, Fatherof4! Since I am not a linguist nor a theologian I cannot offer any arguments dealing with transliterations or roots of words. What is clear is that the end of times and Jesus' Second Coming has not happened... Please refrain from worldly dissection of Scripture and listen to the Holy Spirit: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, (read also 2:6-17) The Man of Lawlessness Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of the Lord has already come. Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God. Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? Jude 1:14-15 (your welcomed to read the whole Epistle) Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him." Revelation 1:6-8 To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father--to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Again, there’s nothing I can state that the Holy Spirit has not set in Scripture! God Bless! Angel |
