Tim, you wouldn't want others to use that sort of reasoning. Just because the Bible does not address a particular matter specifically, we have principles to guide us. Let's take using marijuana, for example. Scripture does not clearly say, 'Thou shalt not use marijuana.' But it does say to obey the authorities (assuming the request does not violate a command from God). It also says "Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." Physicians have proven the 'contaminating' effects of marijuana, thus we know how to distinguish the wrong in this case. Whatever each of us decides as regards voting, smoking or any other decision in life, there is a right course and God will examine us as to how we did. Thus "opinions" matter. |

http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/voting.html Do Christians Have an Obligation to Vote? I once heard of a church where members thought it was against God’s will to vote. Concerned that a corrupt politician would win a local election, church members gathered for an all-night prayer vigil. In the morning, however, they refused to vote and the good candidate lost--by fewer than the number of votes represented by those at the prayer meeting. It seems tragic, but maybe those church members did the right thing. After all, isn't politics a dirty business? Christians are citizens of heaven, not of earth...right? Every Christian must grapple with this question and come up with a defensible answer. THE HIGH COST OF INDIFFERENCE I teach political communication at a Christian college. Once several years ago students in my class complained endlessly about seedy politicians. Yet the day after the election, I discovered that only two of them had voted, and most weren't even REGISTERED to vote! I told them, "For the rest of the semester, if you didn't vote, you have lost your right to complain in this class." Years later they still remember the lesson. |

Rom 13:7,8,14 states: "Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature." For a Christian to remain truly politically neutral, she would have to not only abstain from voting, but avoid formulating opinions about which side appears to have the least harmful approach to a problem. Romans 13:7 admonishes us have respect and honor for all duly elected officials, not criticizing or denegrading any. Love others and you will have fulfilled the law of Christ. Prayers concerning government authorities should focus on our desire that these would not hinder Christians' ability to carry out our God's will. (Acts 4:29,30; 1 Tim 2:1) |
