Bible Note: Hi Tim, "I will draw all men to myself. The word all, which he employs, must be understood to refer to the children of God, who belong to his flock. Yet I agree with Chrysostom, who says that Christ used the universal term, all, because the Church was to be gathered equally from among Gentiles and Jews, according to that saying, There shall be one shepherd, and one sheepfold, (John 10:16.) The old Latin translation has, I will draw all things to me; and Augustine maintains that we ought to read it in that manner; but the agreement of all the Greek manuscripts ought to have greater weight with us."(John Calvin) On the basis of John 12:32 you said: "So, I believe that part of the reason that 'natural' man can respond to God's grace is because God takes the initiative and draws all men to Him." In the unlikely event that I agree with your conclusion, I would find myself at odds with a host of Scripture that shows that the unregenrate (because of the hardness of their hearts) are deaf to the Word of God. To them it is foolishness and they will not because they cannot percieve spiritual things.(1 Cor 2:14) John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." For whom did Christ die? For His sheep." John 10:16 "I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd." they" (jew or gentile) which hear are " they" that will become members of the one flock (the church). It is impossible to say that Jesus is speaking about all men universely. He is speaking of a specific group: His sheep, whether jew or gentile. It is interesting that our saviour said "I must bring them also". The reason I believe that He "must" is because it was the Father's will that He must and that He perfectly accomplished. For now, I better attend to my own little flock of customers. God Bless, John |
