1 | Do you disobey this commandment? | Bible general Archive 1 | Scribe | 42243 | ||
Col 2:16 ¶ Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Col 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. Paraphrase ... sabbath equals shadow Christ.. equals the real body that casts the shadow the Real Body is the real thing not the shadow. The sabbath was given to point to things to come...the rest that Christ would give a man when he came into forgiveness and righteousness by faith in the finished WORK of chirst. SO christians do keep the sabbath by true faith in Christ to make them righteous. In other words if a man trys to get a sense of righteosness by working at keeping a day of the week, he fails. He is working. If a man rests in the finished work of the cross to make him righteous by faith, he RESTS. he therefore keeps the true sabbath. So keep the true sabbath and let those that would trouble you work on at it all they please, it is between them and God, but you may rest in His finished work. Heb 4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. Heb 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. Heb 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Heb 4:11 ¶ Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. |

"meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days" ... are all shadows. -Notice it is "sabbath days" not "sabbath day". There is a difference. -How is Christ the shadow of the other "sabbath days" and the rest of the list? Which day do you keep holy? |

the sabbath days are detailed in the Law. Do a study on sabbath and you will see how there were mentions of sabbath rests of so many years etc. You may be misunderstanding the scripture. It says Jesus is NOT the shadow. The sabbath is the shadow Jesus is the BODY that cast the shadow. The shadow is not the REAL thing the Body that cast the shadow is the REAL thing. Jesus is the reality of the other shadows in the law including meat offerings, and feast days as well. These all point to what Jesus did for us and does for us in the Real spiritual realm and that is what you want to obtain. The reality of the temple in heaven is what you want to dwell in not one made with stones in Israel somewhere. The reality of the Heavenly sabbath is the one you want to enter into so that you might rest for eternity not the one that is only a symbol of the Heavenly one. You want to seek after and obtain the actual Presence of Christ and see Him face to face, and not just be satisfied with your knowledge of Him in this life only. We seek a better country, we seek a better city, we seek a better temple, we seek a better sabbath. A rest that lasts forever. We partake of the Lords supper. The bread and the wine is but a shadow of the real. The Real is invisible. The shadow is visible We partake of baptism, the water has no healing properties, the water is a symbol of the invisible reality. If you want to observe the seventh day as a symbol of your faith in resting from your own works and finding righteousness by faith in Christ death and resurrection then do so. God will only accept it if it is in faith however. But if you condemn your brother for thinking in more real terms of resting in Christ then you are not in faith and your sabbath keeping is not accepted. Offering gifts of religious service to the Lord whether it is sabbath keeping or feast keeping is between you and God. Only remember the saying "Hear O Israel" and do not apply what laws God commanded the Israelites to observe to all gentiles which were never commanded to keep such ordinances. There is more said about circumcision being an everlasting command than there is sabbath and yet no one contends for it becuase of the clear teaching in Acts when the apostles met to discuss this issue about the gentiles that were coming to the Lord needing to be circumcized, and all the OT verses were being used to declare it as an everlasting commandment, and the Holy Spirit said that the gentiles did not need to be concerned with circumcision. Now if you are Jew, there may be a good reason for questioning whether you should be circumcised but all controversy has ended on whether a gentile must be circumcised. So it is with sabbath keeping. You do it as a law, a commandment, then do it with faith, another gentile that never has kept sabbath in his life gets saved throught faith in Christ, has no such commandment in the New Testament, and unless you would join company with the Judaizers that Christ condemened then I suggest you leave the gentile converts alone and preach Jesus and Him crucified. God Bless you in your study of His word. |

You missed the point ... the passage does not say "Sabbath day", but "Sabbath days" .. it is plural. We cannot stop setting aside a holy day of the week. |

I will make one final point on keeping sabbath and then leave it to your own conscience. Define your idea of what the scripture teaches is lawfully keeping the sabbath. Not the many traditions of the Jewish scribes and lawyers that did not get their details from scripture, we know Jesus had plenty to say about them. But what does the scripture teach about lawfully keeping the sabbath. I will not attempt to convince a servant of God that he should or should not keep a law he wants to keep. But if you would keep it then by all means keep it according to the pattern shown in the book. If you depart from that pattern then you expose yourself as not one who is endeavoring to please God as all honest religous exercise would be, but you are demonstrating that you have some other agenda altogether foreign to sound doctrine. For no man can say I want to obey His commandments and then go about changing the details of the commandment given. This reveals a heart not of servitude but of an arrogant and self willed heart, willing to presumptiously change the law to fit his convienience. Ex 31:14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. First of all you would have to form an Eccliastic government over your parishoners so that you might enforce the law open the law breakers. For to keep the sabbath yourself and yet not obey this part of the commandment is to keep part and break part. Ex 35:3 Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day. Then you must also start no fires in your fireplaces or even cook on the stove that day. Would it be lawful to use the microwave? I think not. I could go on but I think the point is made. Keep the sabbath day but keep it holy. If you do work on that day you have broken it. If you think that attending a church is keeping it you make a mistake. If you drive to church you have broken it. |

Elder- We are not under the O.T. law. Jesus resurrected and appeared to his followers on the first day of the week. Each Sunday thereafter, He appeared to them. Pentecost was on a Sunday. If you read in Colossians 2:16, it doesn't matter whether you worship on Saturday or Sunday and stating one or the other is the ONLY day is being legalistic and no different that the Jewish leaders who condemned Jesus for healing on the "Sabbath". By the way, although the priciples expressed in the 10 commandments are reafirmed in the New Testament, the command to set Saturday apart as a day of rest and worship is the only one not repeated there. I think having the Lord's appearance on the first day of the week would put His seal of approval on choosing that day as a likely day to worship. |

That's right - Jesus did keep the Sabbath - as a perfect fulfilment of all the Law - so we don't have to. We are now under a higher law - to fulfil it in heart. We do not need to do all the things that the pre-Christ Jews had to do, He did it for us. Debbie |

"Jesus did keep the Sabbath - as a perfect fulfilment of all the Law - so we don't have to." See Romans 8:4. There you will find that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us. IN us -- not FOR us. |
