Bible Question:
What is an perpetual covenant? Read Exodus 31:12-18 |
Bible Answer: A perpetual covenant is an unending covenent that has to be given by God. It is one-party covenent that that is totally 100 percent dependent upon God. Man cannot make this covenent b/c man is not always dependable to fulfill the requirments of the covenent. For example God told Noah that he would never destroy the earth through flood again. This will be true forever. Usually a covenent made by made is voided after that man dies. Because God is eternal the covenents he makes last eternally. Thus they are perpetual. In this particular instance God is making a covenent with Israel that will be eternal and will signify God's commitment to them (Read my Answer regarding Sabbath)This covenant is still in effect today even though Israel has rejected their Messiah. Notice that the Isrelites never kept the whole sabbath (i.e. the sabbath year)but God worked it out that for every year that they didn't keep the sabbath year they were in dispersed and taken out of their land to Babylon and Persia! God will alway find a way Hope this helps! |
