1 | Is sin inherited from father and mother? | Rom 5:12 | John Reformed | 75565
Hi Tim, "I will draw all men to myself. The word all, which he employs, must be understood to refer to the children of God, who belong to his flock. Yet I agree with Chrysostom, who says that Christ used the universal term, all, because the Church was to be gathered equally from among Gentiles and Jews, according to that saying, There shall be one shepherd, and one sheepfold, (John 10:16.) The old Latin translation has, I will draw all things to me; and Augustine maintains that we ought to read it in that manner; but the agreement of all the Greek manuscripts ought to have greater weight with us."(John Calvin) On the basis of John 12:32 you said: "So, I believe that part of the reason that 'natural' man can respond to God's grace is because God takes the initiative and draws all men to Him." In the unlikely event that I agree with your conclusion, I would find myself at odds with a host of Scripture that shows that the unregenrate (because of the hardness of their hearts) are deaf to the Word of God. To them it is foolishness and they will not because they cannot percieve spiritual things.(1 Cor 2:14) John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." For whom did Christ die? For His sheep." John 10:16 "I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd." they" (jew or gentile) which hear are " they" that will become members of the one flock (the church). It is impossible to say that Jesus is speaking about all men universely. He is speaking of a specific group: His sheep, whether jew or gentile. It is interesting that our saviour said "I must bring them also". The reason I believe that He "must" is because it was the Father's will that He must and that He perfectly accomplished. For now, I better attend to my own little flock of customers. God Bless, John |

3 | Is sin inherited from father and mother? | Rom 5:12 | John Reformed | 75585
Hi Tim, Yes "must" Matt 1:21 "She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." Matthew seems to indicate that Jesus came to save a particular people (His people). He does not use term's like "all" or "many" or even "some". Jesus has referred to this group as His sheep, and as to Himself as the Good Shepard". John 10:26-28 "But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. John |

4 | Is sin inherited from father and mother? | Rom 5:12 | Morant61 | 75611
Greetings John! Of course, I must respectfully disagree. The context of the passage has nothing to do with the Good Shepherd narrative in John 10, since it is a totally seperate occasion as evidenced by John 12:20. Mt. 1:21 probably refers to Israel, so it by no means limits salvation to only some people. Finally, John 10 does not say anything which would rule out those who are not currently His sheep from becoming His sheep. But, I know we will never see eye to eye on this one! :-) I just wanted to make clear that Arminians also believe that fallen man, apart from God's grace, could not respond in faith. We just differ upon whom God extends this grace. I say all, you say some. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

"Finally, John 10 does not say anything which would rule out those who are not currently His sheep from becoming His sheep." Not directly, but notice that he considers the future Gentile believers as already being His sheep: "I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd." --John 10:16 He HAS the other sheep already; He MUST bring them, and they WILL hear His voice. It is good to be part of the right flock, isn't it? :) --Joe! |
