Bible Note: 'Some believe the witch worked a miracle by demonic powers and actually brought Samuel back from the dead. In support of this view, there are certain passages that seem to indicate that demons have the power to perform lying signs and wonders (Matt. 7:22; 2 Cor. 11:14; 2 Thess. 2:9-10; Rev. 16:14). This view is unlikely, since Scripture also reveals that death is final (Hebrews 9:27), the dead cannot return (2 Samuel 12:23 and Luke 16:24-27), and demons cannot usurp or overpower God's authority over life and death (Job 1:10-12). 1.Demons cannot usurp God's authority, which is why one must ask by whose authority did this medium call up Samuel? 2. 2 Samuel 12 23 "But now he has died; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? (1) I will go to him, but (2) he will not return to me." This is speaking of raising the dead not calling back the spirit of someone...however, since Jesus did raise the dead, we know that dead can indeed be raised. 26 'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.' What is this 'chism' or gulf dividing? Bothe the rich man and Lazurus are dead. When the rich man asks Lazurus about sending someone to his living relatives the response is that they will not hear even one from the dead. Neither of these verses substantiate the statement that the dead CAN'T be called back. I will have to post a Part 2 and Part 3 in discussing the other two interpretations. This is a good discussion now. Thank you radioman for bringing the discussion back to Biblical comparisons! There is hope for the forum! God bless |
