Bible Question: Prove in the Bible ... "I(n) every case where the person yielded himself to the Holy Spirit they spoke in tongues." Also, does that mean only Cornelius and Co. (Acts 10) and The 12 (Acts 19) yielded themeselves to the Holy Spirit in athe salvation accounts in Acts? What did the others do if they didn't yield? |
Bible Answer: Searcher56 I think there is a yieldedness to salvation. In other words you allow Jesus through the Holy Spirit to be Lord/Master of your life. I also think there is an additional yieldedness that allows the Holy Spirit to exercise the gifts of the Spirit. In most people many of the gifts are prevalent because they don't require the same level of yieldedness. For example I think most Christians have a degree of discernment and I think they have it because it requires very little yielding on the part of the believer. However speaking tongues requires the believer to yield to something that seems very almost unbelievable but once it occurs you instantly know that you know it is of the Lord. So no I’m not saying the Cornelius and others that spoke in tongues were the only people that yielded to the Holy Spirit. I’m saying they are an example of some that yielded to the point of speaking out in tongues. There is a caution to this. I think there are many that speak in tongues, that were so longing for the manifestation rather than the fullness of God that they allowed a counterfeit to be manifested in their life. Unfortunately they are usually the most outspoken and being in error bringing condemnation of the speaking in tongues. We must first seek the fullness of God and then yield to the stirrings of the Holy Spirit to experience the true manifestation. Once again the gifts of the Holy Spirit are not given to make us members of an elite club (though we are by being in Christ ) it is given to empower us to testify of Jesus to the world. I hope I explained this in a way of understanding if not let me know where I was lacking and I will try again. EdB |
