NASB | Romans 3:4 May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, "THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 3:4 Certainly not! Let God be found true [as He will be], though every person be found a liar, just as it is written [in Scripture], "THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED [by sinful men]." [Ps 51:4] |
Subject: Are all interpretations equal? |
Bible Note: EdB, offhand I can think of no foolishness so crass as coming to the Holy Bible with the base motive not to learn, but to seek from it confirmation of what one has come of his own volition to believe as being spiritual truth. It is nearly always possible to find a verse or two of Scripture tucked away in one or more of the 66 books of Holy Writ that seem good prey to pounce on, that may be tailored, after just a wee bit of twisting and misinterpretation, to fit any number of preconceived ideas. We who are old soldiers on this forum are perfectly aware of this proclivity among certain users, past and present, having seen it demonstrated many times and in a variety of ways. We've been "taught" on this forum that words don't mean what they mean in the real world [e.g. that "all" and "elect" are synonymous], that plain narrative is allegory, that symbolism is literal, that the Trinity is a meaningless term and non-existent simply because the word itself does not appear in Scripture, etc. Here is a line from a song the Shakers used to sing: 'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free. And indeed what a gift, what a gift indeed, it would be to be able to approach God's word with a simple, unassuming heart, free from the evil ties of preconceived ideas that bind our hearts and blind our perception. "Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law." [Psalm 119:18]. --Hank |
