Dear Edb, Right from Genesis 1:26 we find that God gave man authority over all the earth and everything in it. Man was to be under the authority and in obedience to God. When man fell, this very act put him in obedience to Satan...this gave Satan authority. (Ephesians 2:2) In Matthew 4:1-11 we see that the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness. If this was truly a temptation, then Satan had to have this authority. If this authority was not in Satan's possession, then Jesus could not have truly been tempted with it as is evident here. Jesus did not come under Satan however, but remained in obedience to His Father instead. Jesus died for us and rose again. He conquered through obedience to His Father. In that He has taken back authority but we yet have to see it all manifest though it is already an accomplished work. (I Cor. 15: 1-29). I hope this is helpful. Itiswritten |

Itiswritten I walked into that one. Let me rephrase it so we don't word games.. Ephesians 6:12 plainly tells us it is not physical powers we fight against but rather spiritual. Okay? Show me where God gave man spiritual authority over anything. Show me where in the Bible is says man gave Satan spiritual authority over anything. Your right, man was given dominion over the animals and we still have it. Animals are afraid of us. We have physical dominion over the earth this can be seen as we dig and move dirt , as we plow and plant and grow crops. We have dominion over nature as we harness the power of nature with dams and flood gates and such. Those are all far removed from spiritual authority of which we have none. Since we know all authority was given to Jesus Matt 28:18. And who gave it to him? God! For someone to give something they have to possess it first. God who always had all authority and always retained all spiritual authority gave it to Jesus. Satan has absolutely no authority since he is a created being and was never given any. Read Job, who has the authority and who is the one asking permission? Remember Satan is the deceiver and if he can make you think he has authority he can defeat you. We try to make spiritual realities fit into our physical logic. EdB |

Dear Edb, First of all let me say that I never said man had so called "spiritual authority" over anything. I simply gave scriptures which I believe show earthly authority, such as a man being head of a house or a patriarch being the tribal head...which are authoritative situations that are recognized worldwide. From as far back as Genesis 3:16 the husband was given authority over the woman as it ends with and "he shall rule over you." This was part of the curse, by the way. I never said that man or the devil had authority in any legal sense now but though it may not be legal, everything has not yet subjected itself under God as yet. Jesus now legally has all authority, but he took that authority by submitting Himself to the cross, and it is not yet all manifest, though it is won. I simply gave you an answer from what I believe to be true because of Scriptures I gave to support my thought process. I shall give you another: I Corinthians 15: 22-28 and explain this to me if I am wrong. Also, I ask you to have a look at Luke 9: 1-2;and I also ask you to have a look at Mark 16:14-20 where we were commanded to go into all the world and preach the gospel...in the authority of His name. Another thing to answer what you said about the animals. God gave man authority over them in the garden. Man was to name them and care for them and man enjoyed total peace and fellowship with all of God's creatures until after the Flood...much later. The animals then became afraid because they were now prey for us and many of them also became predatores and prey. But originally this was not so, and this was not the authority I was speaking of. I was speaking of the original authority given to Adam to name and to care for the garden and God's lesser creatures. Satan has no authority over myself or any other believer, but he makes havoc in the lives of those who do not believe in the only Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And he causes havoc using evil men who use legal or illegal authority over others in this world until Jesus returns and puts all enemies under His feet. Of course God has all power and authority, even over Satan. But in His great wisdom and mercy and patience, He allows evil to play out this great plan which allows free will and which will justify those who will yet be born and choose to come to Jesus the Christ, the only Lord and Savior. If this clarifies what I am trying to say to you, I hope this is so. If not do not give me archaeology or arguments that you make up to argue with someone's point. I make no argument. I am simply stating what I see the scriptures are saying. I never said God gave man spiritual authority in himself over anything. However, in Jesus name, believers DO have spiritual authority over even evil spirits. I still maintain...Satan is the prince and power of the air(Eph. 2:2)...I believe this denotes authority of some sort because it says he works in the children of disobedience. And I also maintain that Matthew 4: 1-11 shows us that he has some authority in this earth or he could not have really tempted Jesus in the wilderness. The whole episode would have to be considered a hoax if it were not in his hand to give Jesus the things he said he would give Him. Now, like I said earlier, Jesus won it back on the cross through His death and resurrection...but it has not yet all manifest, though it was won. |

itiswritten My apology to you. I was reacting to the heresy that teaches God gave man authority of the earth then man when he sinned forfeited that authority to Satan. Therefore God lost control, God was kicked off the earth and was trying to regain control until He, God managed to trick Satan and sneak Jesus onto earth and win the upper hand. Again your right man was given authority. As you referenced 1 Cor. 15:22-28 man will reign in authority (king, presidents, potentates) until Jesus comes to rule. However this passage is a far distance from the teaching that God got kicked off the earth and was powerless until Jesus accomplished Satan’s defeat on the cross. Many take Matt 4:1-11 as you interpret it. Many others including myself feel Satan really didn’t have the authority to offer those things to Jesus, but had Jesus gave in to Satan's temptation then Satan would have gained that authority to make good on the temptations. In other words Satan’s ability to make good on those temptations hinged on Jesus’ acceptance or rejection of them. This does not diminish or render the temptations any less real. Satan was tempting the man aspect of Christ to gain the God authority he carried. Christ the man knew his trip to glory required the way of the cross Satan was offering glory without the cross. Remember Satan is a deceiver and father of lies, what he is able or not able to do in our lives is dependant upon how much entrance we give him in our lives. Also in reference to Mark 16, we are given the authority to use Jesus’ name, the power is in the name not in anything we possess. EdB |
