In relation to Sunday worship, I would like to add my two cents as well, Lord willing that I should be of profit to someone else. The scriptures tell us in Romans, "Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind." It is also written in Colossians, "Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a holy day or a new moon or a Sabbath day--things which are a shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ." Paul tells us in Romans that there is no command we have that is not summed up by the statement, "Love your neighbor as yourself." Going to church, while certainly a fine thing, is not a commandment. Hebrews 10:25 is often considered a commandment: "not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some ..." I find, however, that the preceeding verse adheres to Paul's teaching, and puts the statement into perspective: "and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near." The early church, as recorded in the writings of Pliny the Younger, met on the first day of the week before dawn. The earliest church, according to Acts 2:46, met every day in the temple, not just on Sunday. When all is said and done, going to church is little more than a "work of the flesh" and is of no profit for righteousness. As it is written in Galatians, "I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly." To summarize what I am saying: We are not commanded to go to church. Let every man be fully pursuaded in his own mind. The one that does not esteem one day above another, God will make him stand, and we should not judge another's servant, for no man should be your judged regarding Sabbaths, or other related holy days. Those that choose to go to church, you do a fine thing. Those that choose not to go to church, it would be better if you did, but it is not required. If you are weak, you could use the instruction. If you are strong, you could instruct others. So either way it is a good thing, and we don't want to forsake the assembling of ourselves because it is our opportunity to provoke one another to love. What day you go is not relevent. It's the spirit behind it; that you are going because you want to, wish to help others, wish to be an active member of a congregation, etc. Love and blessings, Ancient |

2 | Superior Hope | Heb 11:40 | Country Girl | 127230 | ||
I've read over your post and most of those who responded to you. I just wanted to explain my position. I've seen this kind of discussion before and thought it would bear repeating. Basically, as I see it (and I've been taught this) God now provides for three basic kinds of commands in our NT. They are 1) Direct command or imperative statements, 2) Commands by example and 3) Implied Commands. I'll try to provide examples of these three. Imperative Command: In Mark 16:15-18, Christ charges his disciples (future Apostles) with a specific misson which all christians must heed. Command by example: Expelling a brother in unrepentant sin as cited in 1 Cor 5. Implied/Inferred Command: Collection of the saints as cited in 1 Cor 16. Let me emphasize that God no longer extracts immediate punishment at least as far as we know like he did with Uzza and the Ark of the Covenant or with Nadab and Abiuh offering strange fire. So God is (probably not going to immediately punish) a person (a christian) for NOT going to worship assembly on Sundays. But that doesn't mean that God is NOT displeased with that person. We will most emphatically "reap what we sow." Hope this helps and blessings to you. Country Girl |

Good stuff, Country Girl! (With regard to immediate punishment, three things popped into my mind: (1) Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5) (2) the sick or dead who take communion "unworthily" (1 Corinthians 11) and (3) chastening/scourging of God's children in Hebrews 12. I doubt, though, that these directly relate to failure to assemble.) I have to wonder: If God has gone to such lengths to bring us all together in Christ (Ephesians 2), why would anyone want to repudiate His Word and will by avoiding corporate worship? Perhaps this represents something more fundamentally amiss in a person than that he/she is in disobedience. |

Doc Right on! Good pick up. Read post #127212 in it Ancient blames Chrsitianity for and I quote, "Christianity over the course of the last 2000 years is also responsible for the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades, the Salem Witch Trials, The Papacy, Confessionals, Indulgences, and many other horrible things. Just because they taught it doesn't mean they taught the right thing. Orthodox Christianity has murdered, stolen, molested, raped, falsely accused, tortured, and enslaved." I think that clearly shows there is something fundamentally amiss in this person. EdB |

I have posted this in two places to make sure it adequately addresses the problem at hand. EdB... Speaking as someone who was viewing this thread from afar.... I see Ancient has stopped replying to you because of the brashness of your words and their intentional isulting qualities. I can see by this post that your personal crusade to ridicule him has not been assuaged. I am not yet tried in my patience, so I will respond to you on his behalf because you have hounded him to weakness. You are accusatory, your opinions and judgement and condemnation are completely unfounded. You are debating him... or should I say baiting him, specifically for the purpose of strife. For this reason you are become the burning tongue of fire. He has pleaded with you to refrain from your attacks, and you have instead intensified your pursuit of him. Christ tells us we will know a vine by its fruits. I should sincerely hope that the wrotten fruit you are hurling is something you picked up from the ground, and not at all the culmination of the flower of your faith. I should have this hope because while there is life, there is hope. However, I am not so naive, and I recognize that you refuse to concede one inch to his obvious logic, despite the scripture he most accurately quotes, despite his genuine attitude of love for those to whom he writes (even you), despite the fact that the wisdom he subscribes to is easily entreated, despite the fact that the wisdom he subscribes to is sound and without hypocracy, and despite the fact that he is BEGGING you to stop being a stumbling block before him. EdB, I will conclude my thoughts above with your own words: "I think that clearly shows there is something fundamentally amiss in this person." |
