1 | Diff filling vs receiveing the Spirit? | 1 Cor 13:8 | Morant61 | 140281 | ||
Greetings Searcher56! Excellent question my friend! Let's see what Scripture has to say! There are 9 verses that speak of being filled with the 'Holy Spirit: 1) Luke 1:15 - "for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth." 2) Luke 1:41 - "When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit." 3) Luke 1:67 - "His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:" 4) Acts 2:4 - "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." 5) Acts 4:8 - "Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: 'Rulers and elders of the people!'" 6) Acts 4:31 - "After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly." 7) Acts 9:17 - "Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, 'Brother Saul, the Lord — Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.'" 8) Acts 13:9 - "Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said," 9) Acts 13:52 - "And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit." (Note: A different word for 'filled' is used in this verse.) Here are the verses that speak of 'receiving the Holy Spirit': 1) John 20:22 - "And with that he breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" 2) Acts 2:33 - "Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear." 3) Acts 2:38 - "Peter replied, 'Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'" 4) Acts 8:15 - "When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit," 5) Acts 8:17 - "Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit." 6) Acts 8:19 - "and said, 'Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.'" 7) Acts 10:47 - "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." 8) Acts 19:2 - "and asked them, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" The distinction that I note from studying these verses carefully is that one 'receives' the Holy Spirit upon believing (Salvation), but can be 'filled' with the Holy Spirit many times. One or all of the disciples are said to have been filled with the Holy Spirit at least four times. Acts 2:38 and the discussions in Acts 8 and Acts 19 make it clear that 'reception of the Holy Spirit' is evidence of salvation. The 'filling' of the Holy Spirit seems to occur over and over, and is usually associated with empowered for some sort of task - usually proclamation of the Gospel or prophesy. So, my answer would be: Receiving the Holy Spirit refers to the baptism of a person into the Body of Christ done at the moment of salvation. The filling of the Holy Spirit refers to the Holy Spirit coming upon a person to empower him or her for service. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, I still have the filling and receiving of the holy spirit in lower case. I did not get a reply from you on the reference passages for your final thoughts here. From the heart, Ray |
