Doc, Let's begin with one of MacArthur's initial statements. He says, "The subject here then is the assurance of salvation. And we have noted that there are basically two questions to ask. Question number one, is salvation forever? Is it secure? Question number two, can I feel that security? One is a fact and the other is a personal confidence. They are inseparable." It seems he places "feelings" as the basis for "personal confidence." Again, he seems to consider "fact" and "feeling" as inseparable. Therefore, can one safely conclude that if he feels saved, he is saved? |

Feelings are very important to us because we are emotional creatures. However, emotions can be deceiving. Man is spirit, soul, and body. Emotions are a part of the soul of man, they reflect the self image. A person who is spiritual, more importantly, one who is born again, is in communion with our heavenly Father through the spirit. During such communication, the Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. External stimulae comes from the flesh and can give no assurance of salvation. You might read THE SPIRITUAL MAN by Watchman Nee. Available entirely online at http://www.ministrybooks.org/ This classic work shows great insight into the nature of man and, at least in my case, helped me realize that salvation is more of a process than an event. On the other hand, the greatest promise I can hold out to you is: Rom 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. I pray this helps. |

AF, If you are correct that "emotions can be deceiving", it seems they are not good ground for assurance. Therefore, it seems would seem MacArthur began his essay on assurance on an erroneous assumption; and an erroneous assumption generally leads to erroneous conclusions. Thanks for the book reference but I have so much reading to do on my plate, as the saying goes, "so many books, so little time." |
