Emmaus, thank you for your care and effort in answering some of my questions about the beliefs of Catholicism. I believe the only one remaining of those I asked is the one concerning the doctrine of the infallibility of the pope. I'm keenly aware that a funny thing happened to you on your way to the forum with my answers in hand. You ran smack dab (that's a good old Arkansas exression), smack dab into a rip-roaring debate. Well, anyway, I'm pleased that all participants survived -- bruised perhaps, but not mortally wounded -- and I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your efforts and truly feel that you are making an honest effort and doing an honorable job of presenting your communion's points of view, which is what I asked for to begin with. Pray continue. --Hank

Hank, I feel I have probably not done justice to this subject about which so much has been written. I have tried to stick strictly to the biblical roots of the subject. The dogmatic documents on Papal Infallibility are very narrow in scope. Only under very limited specific circumstances does the doctrine apply and only in matters of faith and morals. All other circumstances do not apply and it has rarely been exercised outside of a Council setting and then only after extensive consultation with bishops worldwide. I am not going to post Church Council document on the subject because it seems inappropriate on this list and seems likely to generate more heat than light. You can find the Vatican I document at the following link. It is rather formal in tone and structure like most official church document. http://www.ewtn.com/library/COUNCILS/V1.HTM#6 The Vatican II document on that touches on the subject can be found at the following link: http://www.ewtn.com/library/COUNCILS/V2CHURCH.HTM starting at paragraph 18 as you scroll down. If I had to recommend a single book on the subject it would be: Jesus, Peter and the Keys, A Scriptural Handbook on the Papacy By Scott Butler, Norman Dahlgren and David Hess It is an exhaustive treatment that cites Catholic and Protestant scholars along with the Scripture and the Fathers. I assume like very other book in print it can probably be found at Amazon.com if you have that much interest. I have taken the time to read the archives of your other earlier posts as well as your profile. I enjoy your style of humor and repartee. It is somewhat reminiscent of J. Vernon McGee’s style. It seems only fair you should know something about me. We have an insurance background in common. I am a claims adjuster with prior police experience. I grew up in Washington D.C. and have lived in Baltimore for 33 years. I was raised in a large Catholic family. We did read and discuss the bible at home as well as hear it at Mass. I often wonder what Church all those other Catholics went to who say they never heard scripture there and were told not to read the Bible. Thanks you for your patience. I think I will take a break. |

And a break, Emmaus, you richly deserve. You have, in my mind at least, done an admirable job of presenting your and ( I have every reason to believe) the Catholic Church's beliefs on a number of topics, and you have given them, so far as I am able to tell, in a graceful, forthright and inoffensive manner. Even though I sit in a different pew and hold different views on a number of points of doctrine that have been raised, I will not attempt a rebuttal. I think to do so would make deplorably dull reading for you and the other members of the forum inasmuch as at one time or another I've already posted the core of my beliefs which run more or less parallel with the Baptist Faith and Message of the Southern Baptist Convention, which in turn, I hold, reflects Scriptural truth. I think it quite difficult, even counter productive, for one who holds to the dictum of sola scriptura to debate another who does not subscribe to it, but allows for supplemental investment of authority in church tradition and papal governance. In the absence of agreement on a basic, common premise, the likelihood of effecting total agreement is greatly diminished. Even so, I trust that I shall never become so narrow of mind to believe that my communion has been given the only key to heaven. And in point of fact, I shall begin now to prepare myself for the shock of seeing you in heaven and pray that you will not act overly surprised to see me there :-) Emmaus, again, thanks for a job well done. My very best wishes to you and your loved ones for a Christ-centered Christmas. --Hank
