Emmaus Thanks for your input. I have studied the early church and I have reached some conclusions myself. I think the biggest thing that mystifies me about the whole thing is how did it happen? And when did it happen? Most importantly can it happen again? History usually repeats itself unless the people learn it's lessons. My question was asked to find out what we have learned. Or put another way what do people defend against in the church today. Thanks for you input. I would love to hear your thoughts on my original question thanks again! EdB |

Ed, As someone "on the inside" as it were - I think the doo hit the fan over the long history of popes. Several of them were extremely corrupt. Due to this, I sincerely believe it can and probably will happen again. So we must be ever vigilant. Our current pope is taking phenomenal measures to reunify yet some folks still see him as the antichrist. Given the way of papal history, I really can't see it as paranoid. Just diligent. As for the baptism thing mentioned earlier? 1 Corinthians 28 When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all. 29 Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them? Hugs, Lisa |

Lisa Again I'm not defending the Catholic church. And your right there were many corrupt Popes, just as there are many corrupt leaders in various denominations today. The thing that worries me is what someone in one of the earlier quotes said about the reformation, “…in it's aspirations as well as what it's flaws (extrinsic justification and abandonment of Church Tradition for private interpretation)” If you notice in this thread everyone cites one aspect or another that is wrong with the Catholic church but few cite the same one. This is the picture we are presenting to the unsaved world. Everyone says their way is right and all the other denominations don’t have it quite right. If that person then asks about the Catholic church they will get hit with anything from Pope falsely claimed he was from Peter to unmarried priests. I really believe Christ intended His church to be in unity not just in words but in worship also. EdB |

Hi Ed, Sorry for taking so long to notice your comments. I agree with you about organizations having their flaws. We had a cross-dressing president. Shall we then become communists? (Yes I'm being very silly. But your point is still accurate!) I feel everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It doesn't make them right and it doesn't make them wrong. It's how we feel. We feel and we misinterpret. The Human Factor. Not always good. Which is why the Lord wants us to look to Him! Last Friday I was reading in 1 Corinthians, where Paul is very specific about the last line in your post. Jesus wanted unity. Jesus is our foundation. Then toss in the human factor. OUCH! Jesus never wanted us to run around saying our way is the only way. Jesus wants us to recognize that HE is the way! And tell EVERYONE! Instead we quibble amoungst ourselves just like the Hebrews did in Joshua plotting to go to war because another tribe built an altar. Shame Shame Shame. We need to come together. I'll tell you about one of my closests spiritual friends (not of my denomination) - we used to fight tooth and nail with over dogma. When we put all that aside and devoted ourselves to discussing Our Lord and Savior? Oh, I can't begin to tell you the beauty of it and how deep our friendship is in Him! It's all very interesting how this thread has twisted and turned. Well done to you friend Ed! If you want to see where the church went right, I'd recommend any book my Thomas Merton, spiritual giant. New Seeds of Contemplation, Seven Story Mountain, Contemplative Prayer to name a few. Or Teresa of Avila's book Interior Castle. You might like that one. Guess where our Interior Castle is? Be well, Lisa |
