Emmaus Thanks for your input. I have studied the early church and I have reached some conclusions myself. I think the biggest thing that mystifies me about the whole thing is how did it happen? And when did it happen? Most importantly can it happen again? History usually repeats itself unless the people learn it's lessons. My question was asked to find out what we have learned. Or put another way what do people defend against in the church today. Thanks for you input. I would love to hear your thoughts on my original question thanks again! EdB |

I believe your question is important. And the answers may not be simple. That the Church was in need of reform was not in dispute. All parties agreed on that. The Church is always in need of reform as are all Christians. The question is how to accomplish the reformation? And today how to we heal the Church and restore its vital unity? I believe history is sadly repeating itself everyday with the continuing fragmentation of the Church. The Spirit and Forms of Protestanism by Louis Bouyer is good book on the subject of where the Reformation was right (primacy of grace and scripture)in it's aspirations as well as what it's flaws (extrinsic justification and abandonment of Church Tradition for private interpretation) were. It is written by a man who was both Protestant and Catholic in his life. It is not polemic and is written with a view to reconciliation. In addition to the book mentioned above, Hilaire Belloc wrote two related books: How the Reformation Happened, and Characters of the Reformation. Belloc is an excellent writer and he also was both Protestant and Catholic during his life. His writings are somewhat polemic, but he does make people and history come alive and is fair even to those whose actions or positions he may disagree with. Some of his books are available in text on the web at a variety of sites. I am sorry my answer did not address your original question. It was really more of a response to another member's comments about Constantine and the corruption of the Church in the fourth century. |

Thanks for the input! Have you ever heard of the Convergence movement? I read what I guess could be considered a white paper on it. The idea is the Orthodox religion which is basically your Catholics, Lutherans, Episcopalians, and etc focus on the Father of the Godhead. While the Evangelicals which are Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and etc focus on Jesus of the Godhead. With the Pentecostals which are Church of God, Assemblies of God, and etc focus on the Holy Spirit of the Godhead. The convergence movement is proposing that the very best aspects of these three should be recombined into a completeness. They want to take the mystery of God, the formalness, respect for God and the wonder of God from Orthodoxy and combine this with grace, focus of teaching found in the Evangelicals uniting both to the power, enthusiasm and holiness of the Pentecostals. Believe me I’m not doing this justice but that is a brief view of their thoughts. It has interesting prospects if you think about it. EdB |

I do not know anything about the convergence movement. Where can I see something about it? Where did you read the "white paper"? |

Actually a great friend of mine a Pentecostal Episcopalian Bishop (He was defrocked for becoming Pentecostal and now pastors an independent work) gave me a copy to read. I will check to see if it is now on the internet. | ||||||
