Some Things Are True - - - - - - - - - - - - - 'It is impossible to know the meaning of any written text. If this is true, log off the web now. If not, read this commentary to find out about self-refuting arguments.' - - - - - - - - - - - - - 'Let me give you a picture of my world, by and large, at least as it touches this particular issue. My world is a world in which thinking matters, in which there is such a thing as truth, in which truth can be known and in which we use thinking to assess ideas to determine whether they are true or not. There's really not much room in my thinking system for comments like, Well, that's just your interpretation, or just your opinion, when the emphasis is on "just." Of course it's my interpretation. Of course it's my opinion, but it's not just those things in that I'm not simply sharing my point of view, I'm sharing my reasons why I have a point of view. 'Now it could be that my opinion or my interpretation is mistaken, but the only way for me to find out whether it's mistaken or not is to get at the reasons I draw the conclusions which form either my opinion or my interpretation. I don't believe that all opinions are equal. I don't believe that all interpretations are equal . . .' 2 | Are all interpretations equal? | Rom 3:4 | EdB | 81712
Radioman2 I think something else has to be investigated here also, "Motive". If we don't realize the motive behind the interpretation it will be nearly impossible for us to consider properly anything that would show the interpretation right or wrong. Many interpretations were made for the express purpose of proving something/someone right or wrong. There is also the motive of pride coming up with something no one else has seen or the motive of personal gain. Bias and prejudices play heavily in interpretation and unless they are considered reaching a valid conclusion if the interpretation is correct or not is nearly impossible to find. I think this is what Asis was alluding to EdB |

3 | Are all interpretations equal? | Rom 3:4 | Hank | 81726
EdB, offhand I can think of no foolishness so crass as coming to the Holy Bible with the base motive not to learn, but to seek from it confirmation of what one has come of his own volition to believe as being spiritual truth. It is nearly always possible to find a verse or two of Scripture tucked away in one or more of the 66 books of Holy Writ that seem good prey to pounce on, that may be tailored, after just a wee bit of twisting and misinterpretation, to fit any number of preconceived ideas. We who are old soldiers on this forum are perfectly aware of this proclivity among certain users, past and present, having seen it demonstrated many times and in a variety of ways. We've been "taught" on this forum that words don't mean what they mean in the real world [e.g. that "all" and "elect" are synonymous], that plain narrative is allegory, that symbolism is literal, that the Trinity is a meaningless term and non-existent simply because the word itself does not appear in Scripture, etc. Here is a line from a song the Shakers used to sing: 'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free. And indeed what a gift, what a gift indeed, it would be to be able to approach God's word with a simple, unassuming heart, free from the evil ties of preconceived ideas that bind our hearts and blind our perception. "Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law." [Psalm 119:18]. --Hank
4 | Are all interpretations equal? | Rom 3:4 | John Reformed | 81740
The plain and simple truth is that not one of us has perfect understanding. Even those who penned the Scripture were fallible and prone to error and even to sin. We believe that the Word itself is perfect and infallible, not because of those great saints that wrote it, but because of the Holy Spirit who is the true Author of every jot and tittle. By the by..."All" does not always mean all, and I can prove it by Scripture. :-) John |
