Subject: Are new worship songs scripturally OK? |
Bible Note: David, this song bears the earmarks of one of those "praise choruses" (if that's the right term) that one hears a lot of these days. The lyrics don't quite seem to fit the music in most of the ones I've heard, and neither the words nor the music is over-burdened with excellence...... Aside from the commercial publishers of religious music, whose motivation is transparent, what's behind this rush to push ever-new songs on the church? The church is blessed already with a rich and abundant heritage of fine hymns, many of them Psalms set to music by gifted musicians, and the Psalms are inexhaustible in their power to be an instrument we can use to praise God and that God uses to inspire His people. We are hard put to it to improve on these treasures. A question comes to my mind when I hear contemporary music being used in a worship service and little else. Are we improving the quality of our worship or lowering our standards? --Hank |
