Bible Question:
Please help me. I attend many contemporary Christian worship services. I often have difficulty understanding the lyrics. Some examples: 1. "Let the river flow" 2. "Let your fire fall" 3. "Dance with me Jesus" I don't understand the lyrics to these songs and it makes my worship experience less than optimal. I finally put my foot down with the "Dance with me Jesus" worship song and now I have the Pastor and elders in conflict over the spiritual accuracy of asking Jesus to dance with us...not what I had intended at all! Does anyone else have difficulty over the spiriual accuracy of these songs? Do I really want Jesus to dance with me? Can I stop the river's flow? Isn't the fire falling from God a symbol of His judgment? Do I want any of these things aspart of my worship experiences? Please advise. Blessings! Bud Greenberg PSALM 133 |
Bible Answer: Greetings Bud Greenberg! There gave a great answer! The only thing that I would add to that is that Scripture tells us that "new songs" are good! For instance, Psalm 33:3 states: "Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy." Psalm 40:3 "He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the Lord." Other verses in the Psalms that support singing 'new songs' are Psalm 96:1, 98:1, 144:9, 149:1. Isaiah 42:10 states, "Sing to the LORD a new song, Sing His praise from the end of the earth! You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it. You islands, and those who dwell on them." And we also see more singing in Revelation.. Revelation 5:9 states, "And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation." Revelation 14:3 states, "And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders; and no one could learn the song except the one hundred and forty-four thousand who had been purchased from the earth." So yes, singing "new" songs is Biblical and encouraged! But like There said, just pay attention to the lyrics and you will see if the songs that you sing are "spiritually sound".. :) Before I fully committed myself to Christ, I used to listen to many popular groups (like "The Cars" for instance) that did not sing a single chord of 'spiritual music' in their songs.. But I can see your point as to 'watching' these new spiritual songs to see if their lyrics are Biblically based or not. Praise the Lord! Nolan |
