NASB | 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 John 1:9 If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose]. |
Subject: Are we still in the fallen state? |
Bible Note: Angel - We do not obtain forgiveness by our confession - this would be a "work." We are forgiven because of Christ's shed blood and on the cross - He died once for all. The penalty has been paid. By our confession we proclaim what Christ has done for us and experience the joy of the forgiveness that WE ALREADY HAVE in Him. Jesus HAS cleansed us; our sins have been removed as far as the east is from the west. Hebrews 10: 17 says:"AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE." We have confidence before God because of our justification, which is the forgiveness of ALL sin and the imputation of the righteousness of Christ. This does not mean that our sinful nature is gone - but with the presence of the Holy Spirit, we are no longer a slave to it, nor do we reap the consequences of that nature (eternal separation from God)- for our debt has been paid and cancelled. Yes, if we choose to indulge that nature and continue in sin, we will reap the effects of sin - loss of fellowship with God, Divine discipline (not punishment) as well as the temporal consequences associated with the sin. As we mature in our walk with God, the sin that the Holy Spirit reveals more often deals with the sins of omission and our sinful motives rather than the overt or obvious sins of comission. To suggest that our forgiveness is conditional upon our confession of our sin is to make Christ's blood insufficient - Heb 9 22,28 Blessings, mommapbs |
