Bible Question:
Doc, Please sir, i'm so confused. I've followed every single post on this thread. I really don't want to butt in but what does your screenname mean? It seems to be important to you and to others, but I can't make it out. I'm still to this forum and I'm trying to learn. I'm a freshman in college, so many of the terms mean little to me, but concerning what's where in the Bible, I'm fairly familiar thanks to the blessings God gave me as a child. Your younger and confused sister in Christ, Jo |
Bible Answer: Hi, dear little sister! I am impressed that you had the patience to read through all of that stuff! Most of it is rooted in a lot of quibbling. Be assured that of all quibblers, I am probably chief! :-) My screen name comes from the term "Doctrines of Grace." This is simply a theological synonym for the "Five Points of Calvinism." Now, the Lockman Foundation frowns on debates over doctrine, even citing by name Calvinism and Arminian doctrines. But I do not see that they prohibit their definition. Since they are rooted in scripture, and this is a Bible Study forum, I should think that it is permissable. I will carefully avoid stating anything in a provocative manner. By the way, the Five Points of Calvinism are probably a bit less important for you to understand than the Five Solas. (You can find all kinds of opinions and papers about all of this on the web, including the history of how these doctrines first came to be itemized and why everyone gets so excited about them.) But I'll list them all for you and you can do further research if you choose. First the Five Solas (they are Latin phrases because back when people started talking about them they all wrote in Latin to one another, even though no one actually used it in conversation... weird, huh?): Sola Scriptura (scripture alone) Sola Gratia (grace alone) Sola Fide (faith alone) Solo Christo (Christ alone) Soli Deo Gloria (to the glory of God alone) The Five Points of Calvinism are: Total Depravity (Original Sin) Unconditional Election (God's Election) Limited Atonement (Particular Redemption) Irresistible Grace (Effectual Calling) Perseverance of the Saints (Eternal Security) Its all sounds complicated, and that is because humans love to have appropriate names for things they like to talk about. It just boils down to this: Man cannot save himself, God alone saves, God chooses who He saves and effectually brings about their salvation, and the saved stay that way forever. Truly, the most important thing for you is to continue with your focus on the Word of God. It alone contains all that is needed by a man for salvation. I hope that all of this makes things a bit clearer. You might want to e-mail me for more details if you are interested. By the way, there are many people in this forum that don't like any one or all of these points and/or solas. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are bad, lost, or ignorant. Most of us on here have very specific reasons for believing how we do. Not one of us want to believe something that is false, and every one of us hopes that we are hitting the nail on the head. The important thing is that you hold everyone of us accountable to the Lord and His all sufficient Word. God bless you as you grow in the knowledge of God. In Him, Doc |
