NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:5 Now I wish that all of you spoke in unknown tongues, but even more [I wish] that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater [and more useful] than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he translates or explains [what he says], so that the church may be edified [instructed, improved, strengthened]. |
Bible Question: I KNOW PEOPLE THAT BELIEVE THAT THEY CAN SPEAK IN TONGUES AND RECEIVE MESSAGES FROM THE LORD. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THESE SPIRTUAL GIFTS ARE FOR TODAY BECAUSE IN 1 COR 12:11 IT SAYS THAT THE HOLY SPIRT DISTRIBUTES SPIRTUAL GIFTS AS HE WILLS. THESE PEOPLE BELIEVE THEY GET TONGUES BY FAITH. WHAT IS THE ANSWER? |
Bible Answer: I have talked with hundreds (thousands?) of individuals who say they pray in tongues - and none of them has ever told me they received it "by faith." If someone you talked to said that, it was just their own personal assertion, or perhaps something they heard (or thought they heard). It's not a standard teaching in Pentecostal churches. |
