Bible Question:
What name calling? Literalist? You mean to tell me you're not a literalist? I certainly would hope you'd wear that title as a badge of honor. I have no trouble explaining how a seven day week was established. No more than I would explaining a seven year cycle of planting, harvest and rest. As far as any Biblical evidence to a billion year old earth- what evidence is there period for the age of the earth? I'll say it again. The Bible isn't intended as scientific text. Believing the earth is such and such an age is not a requirement to becoming a Christian or remaining one for that matter. If you wish to treat Genesis as literal, I applaud you. You have a much more difficult task than I do when it comes to witnessing to the scientifically literate seeker. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Nimrod2! I love science. Before I was called into the ministry, my goal in life was to become an astrophysicist. But, I never adjust my reading of the Bible to accomadate science. The reason is simple. Science has been wrong many many times. I'm sure you are aware of the number of times throughout history that entire paradigms have been proven to be in error. There are a lot of areas where Science disagrees with Scripture. 1) Evolution vs. Creation. 2) Eve in Africa vs. Eve in the Middle East. 3) Ect... I agree with you my friend that the Bible is not intended as a scientific text. But, it is an historical document. To harmonize the Creation account with Science requires more than just changing the length of days. Does Science accept the order of creation? The fact of creation? Does Science accept an adult Adam and Eve being created directly by God? If we try to make Genesis acceptable to the scientifically literate seeker, we will have to re-write Genesis to read that God started evolution. Where do we stop? If creation isn't literal, how about Abraham? How about any of the history recorded in Genesis? Can we spirtualize the meaning of it too? So, I don't worry about making Scripture acceptable to anyone for any reason. I just allow the Holy Spirit to convict the scientifically literate as well as the scientifically illiterate. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
