Bible Note: Greetings Scott! You are obviously referring to Genesis 2:17, which says, "..but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die." However, you have also pointed out that Genesis 5:5 states that "all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died." So how do we reconcile the fact that God stated that Adam would die in the day that Adam disobeyed God, and yet Adam lived to see 930 years? Let us look at Genesis 2:17 closely.. Despite the testimony of the serpent (3:4), disobedience of God's commands does ultimately result in death (Romans 6:23). However, the Bible also speaks of being "dead to sin" (Romans 6:11). So, if we take into context just what "death" means in both Genesis 2:17 and Romans 6:11, it means a 'separation' when used appropriately within the context. "..It can mean spiritual separation, physical separation, and/or eternal separation. At the moment of their sin, Adam and Eve died spiritually, but because God was merciful they did not die physically until later (5:5)." (1) If God had put Adam and Eve physically to death (and He very well could of) at the moment of their sin, then the human race would have perished right there, and you and I would not physically be here to discuss these matters! That is, of course, if you believe the Bible when it says that all mankind came from one single man (Acts 17:26). So the fact of our existence proves that the Lord was not speaking of a 'physical' death that would occur in the same day of their sin, but a 'spiritual' death, since sin is separation from God (Romans 5:17). Therefore, your theory that all of Adam's 930 years were lived in that single "day" has been clearly proven wrong, since we all know that Cain would have been born nine months later. Also, Adam had other sons and daughters than Cain, which would prove that he would have to have been present long after Cain was conceived, and all of these events clearly happened after God pronounced His judgment upon man after man's fall. This was an interesting study and you have given me the opportunity to set the record straight concerning literal days, months and years in the Bible, and for that I thank you! :-) Blessings to you, Makarios (1) MacArthur Study Bible, 1997, Word Publishing, John MacArthur, Author and General Editor |
