1 | is it wrong to wear fine clothing | 1 Tim 2:9 | shadow_thorn | 119083
I read alot about men and women wearing shorts, wondering if it's ok or not and that we shouldn't wear things which would make others lust for us.Is it right for one to avoid going to places where he/she will be exposed to people who wear revealing clothing in fear of lusting over them?In doing this is this a step to becoming a better christian?or should we learn to not lust even after being exposed to men or women in revealing clothing? For where is the test if we are not faced with the temptation and choose to refuse it or fall for it.Finally is it wrong to wear fine clothing which makes us look and feel good and attractive to the opposite sex?

"For where is the test if we are not faced with the temptation and choose to refuse it or fall for it." Hi, shadow thorn! Your post is charged... As you read 1 Timothy 2:9 the operative word is "MODESTY!" If we claim to be walking in the Light, John says, how can we live in darkness?--paraphrased. As a Christian we are samples of the Light so our behavior has to reflect this. How can we bring others to Christ or how can the world be convicted if we are indistinguishable from the world? To be a friend of the world is to be an enemy of God. There are no two ways about this! Some congregations behave as if all is permissible in Christ (Paul said that it is but not all edefies). There are people and places that openly reject God and His Commandments, are we to test our resolve, as Christians, by joining the non-believers? There are things beyond our control--since we are in the world--that we will be exposed to on a regular basis. But there are things that are quite under our control: * Dressing provocatively or sensually is not congruent to modesty and cannot lead us to spiritual enlightenment! * Frequenting a night club to find a Christian wife/husband is wanton disregard for the Truth. * Going to the beach should present no problem, unless we simply seek to lust after the scantily covered (more like uncovered) people or it is a nude beach. * Frequenting go-go bars, strip clubs and the like has no merit in Christian entertainment--no matter what society tries to sell to us! As Christians we are called to respect others: we are to evangelize with humility and love. I would rather preach to a friend or an acquaintance who loves to frequent bars outside of his/her prefered environment--attempting to win him/her over by joining him/her at a bar is counter productive as I would be setting the wrong examples for non-believers (or the weak in the faith) and I would be making myself vulnerable (not that I have a drinking problem) while simultaneously testing God! Deluting our Christian values by accepting the worlds terms does not make for spiritual growth! Ultimately, how we teach through example is a deeper and more ecompassing evangelization than preaching with words only. God Bless! Angel |

Angel, you presented two very good points (among others): 1) being sanctified (separated) and 2) letting the Light of Christ be seen of others. I remember before I came to Christ, people would come try to tell me about getting saved and they looked just like me, as far as how they dressed (excessive jewelry, body piercings, tattoos, etc.). I don't even have a tattoo, imaging how much of a stumbling block it was for me to see Christ in them. I see now that some churches have thrown away the "separation" and "be ye holy" teachings of God and have begun compromising to get the world's attention. We have to keep in mind that God says, ". . .with lovingkindness have I drawn you" and that's what will draw the world. The church is a place for sinners to come and get cleaned up. If everyone were turned away because of their sinful lifestyles, there would be no one in the body of Christ. But when they come, they need to be loved and taught, and the same Jesus who cleaned us up, will clean them up. WalkingTalkingBible |

"We have to keep in mind that God says, ". . .with lovingkindness have I drawn you" and that's what will draw the world." The problem with compromising (see American History) is that those who compromise usually end up lossing everthing! Do you remember Jesus compromising, ever? Even when most of His followers left Him when He told them that they would have to eat His flesh... did He call them back and said: "Wait, wait, I was using a metaphor--please, I did not mean it literaly!" When forgiving the sins of those He healed or rescued did He tell them "go and do the best you can for God is merciful and loving?" When the young man came to Him and told Him that he must first tend to his recently deceased father, did Jesus command "everyone, take five?" God is so loving that He does not set a limit to the number of sins nor does He allot a certain amount of forgiveness per sinner... but time and again the call has been to "be perfect," "sin no more." As Christians, we can love people, even when they reject Jesus. We can teach them with love and humility. We can see them as creatures of God and not as underlings who need rescue! But we can never compromise God; we can never compromise His Word; we can never compromise Christ's Love! When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a wedding garment, and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man was silent. Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darkness outside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth." For many are invited but not all are chosen.' (Matthew 22:11-15) Now, I could be wrong... it may be that Jesus was killing time and not just teaching... But I rather err on the side of caution and believe that He meant for us to change our old garments into new... and not that the Church should down-grade His teachings so that more people can find them unobstrusive enough to join in, by the millions! God Bless! Angel |
