mommapbs, You'll need to support your view with Scripture and prove Luke 23:46 didn't happen. The cup passing and His sense that He was forsaken was the phyiscal suffering ... I think about the OT sacrifice system. All the animals died physically. Searcher |

2 | Did Jesus die spiritually? | 2 Cor 5:21 | Mommapbs | 83106
In Gen 2:17 God told Adam and Eve the consequences of sin: "in the day that you eat from it you will surely die." Did they die physically or spiritually? Sin separates us from God. Would not Jesus, as our sin bearer, also be separated as a result of OUR sin? As for the death of Jesus, If the suffering was merely physical, why would Jesus have been in such anguish over it? I submit that the pospect of being separated from the Father for even a nanosecond was more that He could bear to imagine. When we consider His death in this light, it makes our salvation even more significant. Yes, most people will die physically, but not everyone has to die spiritually, because Jesus has already paid this penalty for our sinfulness. Did not Jesus taste death for us, so that we would not have to? Hebrews 2:9 This is just my thinking. I'm sure that more accomplished Biblical Scholars have much more to say and debate on this topic . . . |

"Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people." Hebrews 2:17 Could Jesus be made like His brothers in all things without sinning? Yes! He too experienced the consequence of sin as our sin-bearer: separation. See also Hebrews 4:15-16 |

6 | Did Jesus die spiritually? | 2 Cor 5:21 | Mommapbs | 83192
Searcher, if you read my posts you will see that at no time have I suggested that the spirit dies - we are ALL created as eternal beings! However, where we spend that eternity is the difference between Life and death (which I have equated with eternal separation from God). Just this morning I was thinking about the last words of our Lord . . . "It is finished." And, "Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit." As I have been reading the dialog on this thread, I sense that there are just some things of which we cannot know. I believe that the Godhead chose to take (and hence, experience)the penalty for our sin (death, meaning spiritual separation from God)yet, to me the length of time that Jesus was "forsaken" it a question I cannot answer. Perhaps when Jesus declared that "It is finished", He was not only attesting to the debt for sin was paid in full, but the penalty (separation from the Father as a result of being our sin bearer) was completed as well???? It is enough to know that He chose to endure this inconceivable state of Being for me! I do not agree with those who believe that Jesus went to "hell", unless they are referring to the place of the dead as described in God's Word as sheol. From the story of Lazarus and the rich man, we learn that Sheol had two sides: one for the wicked (torments) and the other for the righteous (Abraham's bosom or Paradise). This is a place created by God - it is not a place where another poster suggested that Satan has dominion or where he "torments" residents there. The "great gulf" between the two sides is a poignant reminder of the eternal destiny that is determined in the physical realm. Since the resurrection of Jesus, we have confidence as believers that when our bodies physically die, our spirits will be with the Lord. As a side note, I reject the notion of "purgatory" or a soul sleep for the believer. This contradicts 2 Cor 5:6-8 as well as the assurance of the Lord that where He is we will be also (John 14:3). . . He is at the right hand of the Father (Heb 12:2); Jesus is not in Paradise, therefore, neither are those who have physically died in Him! I believe that Eph 4:8 could refer to the opening of Paradise. When Jesus ascended to the Father, He led out "captives" or those who were residents of the Paradise side of Sheol, those who had been credited with the righteousness of God. (Could these be part of the great cloud of witnesses? Heb 12:1) I believe that now, the only residents of Sheol are those who have rejected God. (Rev 20:13) I hope this clarifies my position - at this point . . .as God reveals His Truths, may we be willing and receptive partakers of it! mommapbs |
