Hi John: Here is my thinking that I sent on to Searcher as well: In Gen 2:17 God told Adam and Eve the consequences of sin: "in the day that you eat from it you will surely die." Did they die physically or spiritually? Sin separates us from God. Would not Jesus, as our sin bearer, also be separated as a result of OUR sin? As for the death of Jesus, If the suffering was merely physical, why would Jesus have been in such anguish over it? I submit that the pospect of being separated from the Father for even a nanosecond was more that He could bear to imagine. When we consider His death in this light, it makes our salvation even more significant. Yes, most people will die physically, but not everyone has to die spiritually, because Jesus has already paid this penalty for our sinfulness. Did not Jesus taste death for us, so that we would not have to? Hebrews 2:9 This is just my thinking. I'm sure that more accomplished Biblical Scholars have much more to say and debate on this topic . . . |

Dear mommapbs, I been thinking about the question you posed, which concerns whether or not Jesus had to suffer spiritual death for the atonement to be consistant with the penalty. The arguement, as I understand it, is that if the penalty imposed upon Adam and his seed was "spiritual death", therefore, Christ, as our substitute, would have had to experience spiritual death as well. One of the problems that arise from this arguement is that all who suffer this penalty, suffer it for all eternity and without hope of reconcilliation with God! The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus ascended into heaven and is seated on the Throne at the right hand of The Father: Luke 22:69 "But from now on THE SON OF MAN WILL BE SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND of the power OF GOD." Before I continue, I would be interested in your response. God Bless, John |

Greetings in the Name of Jesus! Although I didn't originally pose the question, I too have been thinking much on the price that Jesus paid to purchase my (our) redemption. I believe that we must look beyond physical death, yet it is difficult to reckon or understand exactly HOW our redemption was accomplished . . . the possibility of Jesus "tasting death" (Heb 2:9)so the we would not have to is almost more than I can bear to comprehend, yet I do believe that God wants us to know the depths of His amazing love for us - and I do begin to get a greater grasp as I wrestle with these things. John, just this morning, I was pondering Jesus' words, "It is finished." As I understand it, these were the words sent through Israel AFTER the sacrifice for sin had been COMPLETED. Hence, the animal had died and the priest had presented the blood of the sacrifice in the Holy of Holies. Yet, Jesus uttered these very same words BEFORE He gave up His spirit. SO, are we able then to consider that the penalty for sin involved more than just His physical death? The penalty for our sin was paid in His physical body as He knew no sin - and yet as our sin bearer, Jesus could receive the penalty for our sin. So, HOW this penalty was exacted, I can only speculate, but I am inclided to believe that it was THIS that Jesus was in great anguish over, not the process of physical death. There is soooooooooo much that I do not understand, and much more that I probably never will, but I have been blessed as I consider these great and awesome things of God's Word. Thanks for keeping me on my knees. mommapbs |
