How to know you are in the spirit while speaking in tongues?
2 | speaking in tongues | 1 Cor 14:22 | leolipwee | 51339
i don't have bibilcal explanation for this but i have this theory - The Holy Spirit was given to us as a witness to the truths about GOD's matters. So for one to know whether or not you are in THE Holy Spirit while speaking in tongues, then test it. What are you speaking in tongues for? 1 Corinthians 14:22 states that tongues are used as a sign for unbelievers (that they might hear a foriegn tongue and yet still understand, Acts 1:6 to 1:11) and for believers (that they may hear revelations, knowledge, prophesies or teachings, 1 Corinthians 14:6) so if you speak in tongues and you are in front of unbelievers, do they understand? if you are in front of believers, do they have revelations, knowledge, prophesies or teachings? i don't know whether my answer have been helpful, but i pray that my young walk with JESUS helped you (ot others) somehow. May I, without pressing for familiarity, call you leo? :-)I believe you are on a safe track with your explanation regarding tongues. I've said before that English-speaking peoples might well have been spared a great deal of confusion had the translators used the word 'languages' instead of 'tongues', because 'languages' better conveys the sense of what is meant in the passages where 'tongues' is used. The phrase 'speaking in tongues' seems to have an inherent sense of esoterica and mysticism, whereas 'speaking in languages' does not and conveys more nearly to the reader of English the meaning of the Greek. As for the expression 'being in the spirit' (or Spirit?), I'm not quite sure what meaning is placed on that by the questioner. John used the expression in Revelation, but his meaning and the meaning attached to it by modern Pentecostals may or may not be the same. I simply don't know. My emphasis has been directed more to the Spirit's indwelling in me as a regenerate believer, not to my being 'in the Spirit' -- whatever that means. --Hank

yes you may call me leo, that's how my other brothers, sisters and friends have too called me. ;) About the expression 'being in the spirit' (or Spirit?), i have something additional that i want to share and perhaps you have a different revelation from mine. i noticed that while we know we HAVE the Holy Spirit, i think it is different from being IN the Holy Spirit. i sorta think that the difference is that whenever we HAVE the Holy Spirit, he presents to us witness to the truth and helps us as JESUS would have. But when we are IN the Holy Spirit, we have more gifts, like speaking in tongues, having teachings, revelations, knowledge, and even prohesies. but i think we don't have all the gifts as mentioned above, because we are not FILLED WITH the Holy Spirit. To me, i feel that its our faith in His Name that will position the Holy Spirit, enabling us to have different gifts. i have prayed for such faith too. For me, my young walk with JESUS has pushed me from faith to faith, and it showed me tremendous works that i praise Him for. i pray that it had been for you too and hopefully, for those unbelievers out there in this forum. Shalom be in you Hank, leolipwee |

I will venture, leo, to say on pain that I may border on being too pedantic, that your spiritual growth will be fertilized more by regular and diligent study of God's word, by prayer, by corporate worship, and by fellowship with the saints than by anything else. Leo, the Bible doesn't support extra-biblical, individualized 'revelations' -- it alone is our standard of faith and practice. It is the complete revelation of God to man, once and for all delivered to the saints. There is a never-ending stream of false doctrine -- doctrine about special revelations, special powers of healing -- special this and special that. Be a Berean: search the Scriptures to see whether what you may hear is what Scripture teaches. If not, reject it like you would reject poison! And that you may grow in your walk with the Master is my prayer for you. --Hank
6 | speaking in tongues | 1 Cor 14:22 | leolipwee | 51361
that's true Hank, the Bible IS the singular revelation of God to man. :) letme explain why i have those impressions (or revelations that we common call them), taking notice that the Bible pointed the Holy Spirit in the direction of speaking in tongues, having teachings, revelations, knowledge, and also prohesies. in Acts 1:4, the unbelievers being FILLED with the Holy Spirit, spoke in tongues, justifying what was mentioned in 1 Corinthian 14:22. not only that, they understood one another. But they don't HAVE the Holy Spirit, as seen in Acts 2:38, because they have yet to recieve it. Again in Acts 4:8 and in Act 4:31, we see the gift again. There are many others passages that shows that the Holy Spirit is not only a witness to GOD, it gives the person knowledge, teachings, revelations, as well as prophesies. As such, i don't think there are "SPECIAL POWERS", its just the Holy Spirit at work. Anything special that men attest to are just to boast men's PRIDE, the very thing that JESUS didn't like the Pharisees to do. All the wonderful works are done through the Holy Spirit by GOD in JESUS's name, like healing. But revelations, that's part of the reason why JESUS gave us the Holy Spirit. You have it too and it has been actively showing you new ways to look at GOD, hasn't it? :) i gladly recieve your prayer, and i pray that my eyes will not stray away from the Bible about GOD's words. thank you Hank. 7 | Have we been resisting the holy spirit? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Ray | 51389
Have we been resisting the holy spirit? Hi leolipwee, I have noticed that you speak of the Holy Spirit as "it" occasionally. When I speak of "it" I speak of the holy spirit for it is then thought of as a gift, a promise, a power that we have from God. Do you see what I mean and do you agree? I believe that there is the third Person of the Trinity and there is the holy spirit that is the gift that we have been given and with which we can be filled. For instance Acts 1:8, "...but you shall receive power [baptized with the holy spirit, verse 5] when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be (My) witnesses..." I believe that the Spirit descended upon Jesus in Matthew 3:16 and Mark 1:10. But He is a Person who baptized in the holy spirit rather than in water. It is because of the witness of the Spirit that we know Jesus as God. We know Him as the Beloved Son. I believe that we are filled with the holy spirit [sic] in all of the occurances in the Scriptures. Go through the 8-11 times that the filling occurs and see if a Person is spoken of. So I believe that we are filled with the holy spirit, or at least should be as Christians, and capable of speaking boldly the word of the Lord. For it is not we who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit. See Mark 13:11 and Luke 12:12, "for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say." When I talk about the holy spirit it is a new way to "not look at God", in a sense. Just as I want people to look at the Man instead of the man, Jesus Christ; I want you to consider also looking at the holy spirit instead of the Holy Spirit in some portions of Scripture. I would make holy spirit lower case in all the occurances of being filled. Acts 2:4; 4:8; 4:31; 9:17; 13:9; Luke 1:15; 1:41; l:67. I would appreciate anyone's comments. Could it be that we have been resisting the holy spirit? Acts 7:51, "You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the *Holy *Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did." From the heart, Ray |

8 | Have we been resisting the holy spirit? | 1 Cor 14:22 | leolipwee | 51414
yes, i believe that the Holy Spirit is the gift, the promise, and the power from GOD. But in my study, i found that the Holy Spirit is not only a witness to GOD, it gives the person personal edification, the power to speak in tongues, to have knowledge, teachings, revelations, as well as prophesies. as for Acts 1:8, it is true that it is mentioned they recieved power, but what? in this chapter, we have just seen the power of speaking in tongues when they were filled with the Holy Spirit so that they might be a witness and believe in the preaching of the Gospel. as for the 8-11 times the filling occurs, can you point it out to me so that i can make a study? for your comments on that '...When I talk about the holy spirit it is a new way to "not look at God", in a sense...' i'll explain why that is so for me. i never saw GOD the same way a long time ago (when i wasn't saved yet) even though i have been reading the Bible, yearning to find truths. when i was saved, and recieved the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to the Bible, enabling me to find JESUS in many OT books in the Bible where His name wan't mentioned at all. As i found out later, the reason why even though i have read them and not understood and seen, was that simply the Holy Spirit have yet revealed the mysteries to me. also, i am not too sure why would there be the need to put the "Holy Spirit" as the "holy spirit", that is to put it down. The Holy Spirit in the verses that you have pointed out, has almost always gave the people the power to speak in tongues, to have knowledge, teachings, revelations, as well as prophesies (which is strengthen in 1 Corinthian 14). But even as all that are in this forum, and discussing about the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit IS working in us, spurring us to the truth about JESUS and our FATHER GOD. I don't think we can resist the Holy Spirit once we are saved because the Holy Spirit was sent to us from out FATHER GOD for a purpose (John 16:7-15). moreover, what GOD had cleansed and done, we are not to call it dirty and uncommon. Through one man's (Adam) sin, the world fell, and through one man's (JESUS) obedience, the world (for those accepted JESUS as their saviour) rose in victory. i hear your heart, and i pray that my young walk with JESUS have helped you. Shalom, leolipwee |

9 | Have we been resisting the holy spirit? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Ray | 51466
Hi leolipwee, Although you have said, "yes, I believe..." we are not in agreement with each other because of the differences in capitalization. I have said that the Holy Spirit is not an "it" but a "He". If the word "it" is used, for me it means a gift, a promise, or a power that is distinguished from a Person. In other words, I find nothing wrong with thinking of the holy spirit that we receive from God as being an "it", but the Holy Spirit that gives us this power, gift, promise, etc. is a Person. And I show that by capitalizing His name. I distinguish between a gift and the Giver. We know that He is a Person when we read Acts 13:2, "...the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." They were sent out by the Holy Spirit. But when I read of the filling of the *holy *spirit I find no verse that would give indication of a Person as the "Me" and the "I" does for Acts 13:2. The 8 times of being "filled with the Holy Spirit" I listed in my other post. Check them out to find a pronoun that would suggest that this "holy spirit" was a Person. As far as a word study for "resist" I found Romans 9:19, "For who resists His will?" and Romans 13:2, "Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves." Also, 2 Chronicles 13:8, "So now you intend to resist the kingdom of the Lord..." These references speak of resisting the will, authority, and kingdom of God; but can anyone conceive of the possibility of resisting Him as a Person? Wrestling with an Angel is the closest I can think of, but the other guy came out of the match worst for wear. That wasn't an example of resisting though. Right now I can't resist the call of my bed. Later. From the heart, Ray |

:) i think i understand what you are trying to tell me. letme see if i get it right. if you are telling me that because i called the Holy Spirit "it", it (no pun intended) means that i think that the Holy Spirit is indistinguishable from being a gift, promise or power, i have to admit- yes i think of the Holy Spirit in that way, all rolled into one. But to me, the meaning attached is slightly different. the Holy Spirit is both the Gift, the Promise, and the Power from our FATHER GOD, as well as the Giver of personal edification, the power to speak in tongues, to have knowledge, teachings, revelations, as well as prophesies. i referred to the Holy Spirit as it, because simply, i don't know the sex. as such i do not know how to reference the Holy Spirit properly. perhaps someone seeing this post can shed some light from me on how to reference the Holy Spirit properly. to me the Holy Spirit is simply a Spirit, not a Person. although in Acts 13:2, the Holy Spirit said something, past references have always shown that the Holy Spirit gives a person utterance in boldness and knowledge in and of GOD. i have checked the references like you have mentioned, and i could not find the suggestion that the Holy Spirit is a Person. the most plausible explanation for Acts 13:2 that the Holy Spirit is not a Person and a Spirit, is that the bible gave the glory to the Holy Spirit as the speaker. it would have been odd to read for example that Simeon that being filled with the Spirit, said "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.". would it have been the speaker's works? it has to be from GOD, and yet they did not have recorded "GOD said" because JESUS already told them our FATHER GOD has sent a Helper. they probably have recognised the Holy Spirit as GOD's revealer of mysteries. Also, if the Holy Spirit is a Person, there was no record here of its manifestation. therefore, i conclude that the Holy Spirit may have spoke IN all present because there are no different Holy Spirit. i believe the Holy Spirit has no other will except to do the will and purpose of FATHER GOD (John 16:7-15). until someone have a biblical supported answer that is different from my understand of the Holy Spirit (that "i found that the Holy Spirit is not only a witness to GOD, it gives the person personal edification, the power to speak in tongues, to have knowledge, teachings, revelations, as well as prophesies."), i think i'll stick to that. ah yes, the call of the bed. have a good rest then. i thank you for the insights that you have provided me with. its as invaluable as Hank's post to me. i pray that your rest be blessed. from my heart, the young walker with JESUS, leolipwee |

11 | Have we been resisting the holy spirit? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Morant61 | 51480
Greetings Leolipwee! In both John 16:13-14 and Eph. 1:14, the Holy Spirit is referred to with the masculine pronoun 'He'. Further, as the third Person of the Godhead, He is very much a Person, not just a power or force. As such, in Scripture, He: 1) Can be grieved - Is. 63:10. 2) Speaks - Mk. 13:11. 3) Teaches - Lk. 12:12. 4) Instructs - Acts 1:2. 5) Can be lied to - Acts 5:3. 6) Is a witness - Acts 5:32. 7) Can be resisted - Acts 7:51. 8) Strenghens and Encourages - Acts 9:31. 9) Makes decisions - Acts 15:28. 10) Restricts - Acts 16:6. 11) Warns - Acts 20:23. 12) Appoints overseers - Acts 20:28. 13) Sanctifies - Rom. 15:16. 14) Protects - 2 Tim. 1:14. 15) Reveals - Heb. 9:8. 16) Testifies - Heb. 10:15. 17) Inspires Scripture - 2 Pet. 1:21. All of these are things which can only be done by a Person, not just a force or power. Scripture is very clear that the Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity. I hope this helps! Hi Tim, Thanks for the list concerning the Holy Spirit. I will be going through the list. May I look at Isaiah 63:10 with you so that I may ask a question of you? First of all let me say that I go with the NKJ with its capitalization of Angel but not "Presence" for Isaiah 63:9. This Angel is the Holy Spirit of verse 10 for my mind. But my question is for verse 11. It talks of God's flock and says, "Where is He who put His *holy *spirit in the midst of them, who caused His glorious ARM to go at the right hand of Moses,..." My own emphasis for the word arm. Do you have any space in your belief system for the existance of a *holy *spirit, an arm of power if you will, or a finger of God? How much are you willing to translate the "who" of Ephesians 1:13 into a "which"? For that matter, how much would you be willing to make the word truth capitalized there? Isaiah 63:1 talks of "...This One who is majestic in His apparel, Marching in the greatness of His strength?" There was no man with Him; but His own arm brought salvation to Him. Isaiah 63:5 says, "I looked, and there was no *one to help, And I was astonished and there was no *one to uphold; So My own *arm brought salvation to Me; And My wrath upheld Me." How much are you open to the idea of Jesus being filled with the holy spirit, as well as being the Holy Spirit? You spoke of the things being done by a Person, not just a force or power. Do you have room in your belief system for the Person AND ALSO, IN ADDITION, a force, or power, or arm, or finger, or some other gentle spirit, or "it"? Just food for thought as I respect your opinion. Remember that my study in the word of God is one that is in progress as is everyone's, and I am glad that God loves us all wherever we are in our walk with Him. From the heart, Ray |

Greetings Ray! I'm getting ready to go to bed, so I'll have to give you a short answer for now! :-( I don't see any evidence or reason in Scripture for making a distinction between holy spirit and Holy Spirit. I believe that the Holy Spirit is the power of God, but that He is the 3rd Person of the Trinity, not an 'it'. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are literally indwelt by the Holy Spirit, not simply filled with power. Good night for now my friend! I hate 3rd shift! ;-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
