NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:22 Therefore, [unknown] tongues are [meant] for a [supernatural] sign, not to believers but to unbelievers [who might be receptive]; while prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people] is not for unbelievers but for believers. |
Subject: Have we been resisting the holy spirit? |
Bible Note: Thanx Tim, the references are so dear to me. just a few notes, can you help to see whether i got my perspective right: 1) Is. 63:10 - the Holy Spirit, not yet revealed to the people, could only have recognised GOD's spirit (that HE is Holy). however, within the context, it is not so known which spirit is Isaiah referring to. we can only guess. 4) Acts 1:2 - JESUS too relied on the Holy Spirit while in His walk on mortal world. what He had done was a perfect example of what we should be doing- relying on the Holy Spirit to guide us regarding GOD's will. 7) Acts 7:51 - in the context of the passage, He was resisted by unbelievers if i am not wrong, not believers. 9) Acts 15:28 - the line 'when it seemed good to the Holy Spirit' did not indicated that the Holy Spirit made the decisions. the Holy Spirit gave witness that it 'seemed' good. But the decision makers were the people in the council, namely Peter, Barnabas, Paul, James, Simon, Barsabas, Silas and other unnamed apostles and elders as well as the writer of Acts. but noticed why it 'seemed' good? Doesn't it tell you that the writer too was unsure that it was 'really' good? in fact, many of the people who made the decision have yet to realise the fullness of GOD's grace (Jewish tradition holds as you would have noticed from the letter that they wrote). yet the Bible is honest to record such instances. that's also why the Bible is so believable for me. :) 2) Mk. 13:11 - see below. 3) Lk. 12:12 - see below. 5) Acts 5:3 - see below. 6) Acts 5:32 - see below. 8) Acts 9:31 - see below. 10) Acts 16:6 - see below. 11) Acts 20:23 - see below. 12) Acts 20:28 - see below. 13) Rom. 15:16 - see below. 14) 2 Tim. 1:14 - see below. 15) Heb. 9:8 - see below. 16) Heb. 10:15 - see below. 17) 2 Pet. 1:21 - see below. these passages i have read and (think i)understand. the key question is that why can this be only be done by a 'Person' and not 'Spirit'? i can understand now that the Holy Spirit is referred to with the masculine pronoun 'He'. But i have yet still to understand why is the Holy Spirit a 'Person'? the way i interpretted the Scriptures you have listed is that the Holy Spirit is a 'Spirit', as it has been recorded. i don't remember an occurance where it is recorded that the Holy Spirit is a Holy 'Person'. why then couldn't it be that the Holy Spirit, as a 'Spirit' sent by GOD, can perform the points which you have listed? why must He be refered to as a 'Person' then? the Holy Spirit that i know of (the reason why GOD sent Him is as listed in John 16:7-15), can give us help, comfort, heal, personal edification, the power to speak in tongues, to have knowledge, teachings, revelations, as well as prophesies (as shown thoughout 1 Corinthian 12 and throughout your listed points), from our Abba FATHER GOD, via inner promptings, prophetic utterance from prophets, external circumstances, or by manifestation. to me, being a 'Spirit' and being a 'Person' has a difference. to me, saying that the Holy Spirit is a 'Person' brings Him down to our level. we don't say that angels can be refered to as a 'Person' too, do we? to me, the Holy Spirit is not the third 'Person' in the Trinity but the third 'Spirit'. are there any records in the Bible then, that states but not imply that the Holy Spirit is a 'Person'? if there isn't, why do many keep saying that He is one then? why not leave the word as it is, as the 'Holy Spirit', as a 'Spirit'? i hope that i do not sound too stubborn. its just that i, being young in my walk with JESUS, have yet to aquire the right teachings. i am still learning to walk. :) once again, thank you, my brother in Christ. leolipwee |
